C1 7 & Canon GP-E2 GPS Receiver?
This would be a really useful feature for me, helping me with client's needs to pinpoint where shots were taken, and giving me some dangerously useful proof that I was actually out shooting when they were paying me.
I was wondering if anyone was using this system (or the Jobo one which I cannot find for sale) and how it works with C1, if it's data shows up in the metadata OK and all the info makes sense.
I am assuming the gps data gets downloaded to one folder and then it's associated with a folder full of the shots. Could this be the same folder I am importing my files to via C1? I don't want a cumbersome workflow. I've lived without it long enough, I can continue to do so if it's a headache to administer.
I know my expectation of this kind of kit often exceeds reality, so I thought I'd ask for any heads-up on limitations before shelling out the same kind of lucre that would buy a high end SatNav for a car.

Any help or deterrence advice greatly welcome.
thanks!

That's so much better than I was hoping for, thanks for replying Drew. Brilliant! 0 -
I have been using the 5DIII and GP-E2 for a number of months and it works quite well. The location information is very accurate and shows in Capture One. The direction does not seem to be supported by a field in C1 although it doesn't strip it out and I can see it in other programs. It would be nice if that was supported.
Having said that, I find the direction is not that accurate in a helicopter where I would have the most use for it.
Using the GP-E2 in log mode to update files from older cameras is not so great. I can't seem to connect it to the Mac anymore and when I did I notice it doesn't transfer altitude info. Hopefully Canon will be improving their Map Utility software.0 -
Hi Rick
Thanks for responding.
So you don't use any third party software between the camera and C1?

Hi John,
No, the location, altitude and direction are encoded directly into the 5D mkIII files and stay there for any application to read. I'm an aerial photographer this is much more accurate than using a third party device and software.

workabove! Nice.
Thanks Rick, I'm a step closer to pulling the old wallet out the back pocket.
cheers.0 -
John, probably not worth saying, but make sure you have a compatible Canon camera. Another small advantage is you can set it up so the Camera time is always updated by the satellites. No need to manually set the camera time again!
Disadvantage is that it takes up hot shoe space although you can use a bracket and cord.0 -
Thanks, like you it'll be going on a 5D3. And no problem with the hot shoe, they never get used on my cameras.

Thanks again for your kind help.0
