Perhaps I am missing your point, but I don't see why you cannot do exactly what you want.

Create a variant, edit it and then Open With to send the variant, and its edits, to whatever editor you want. Or am I missing something basic here?

Create an export recipe that exports the tiff to where you want it and opens it in PS once completed. The whole point of the "edit in" feature is to keep the file in the catalog.

First off, thanks for your answers, This is a big software program so I have a lot to learn. I understand that I am defeating the purpose of keeping the photo in the catalog. Keeping the photo in the catalog will greatly increase the size of the catalog. I'm a graphic designer so the file can end up really large by the time I'm done with it. This became my workflow after Aperture saved several of my PSD edits and they looked rather weird. Best to keep PSDs separate from the catalog, I think.

Creating an export recipe sounds like the solution that I'm looking for but I don't know how to that. I know that Capture One is scriptable, is that what you are suggesting?

An alternative solution would be to export a Variant to a folder and then open it in PS. I do know how to do that. It's just an extra step that I didn't want but that could work.

Its not scripting, its setting up the export from CO. Check the manual and online videos for capture one recipes. Its the equivalent of an export preset in Lightroom.
