I know I can 're-develop' an image in the history list. But can I get back the settings?

Not sure I understand the question. I rephrase: you have developed an image with certain adjustments, next changed the adjustments, next want to re-develop it with the settings during first development.

    What I mean is this.

    Scenario:
I create settings on the primary and only variant and develop an image. Then later on that same primary variant I change the settings, maybe several times and develop it again

    Question:
Is there a way I can retrieve the original settings from the first developed version, say as a 'clone of the variant that is in the history list'

No, not that I am aware of. As you probably discovered, the history list retains the older settings but it is not possible to retrieve these settings later. Creating an extra Variant before you change is an option of course, as you more or less suggested already.

It is easy to forget to create a variant up front.

It would seem an easy feature to add: Right click on a developed image in history for option to copy settings and/or create clone variant from history list.
