Lag in Image Loading

I am new to Capture One Pro coming from LR. I am using C1 for Mac on a MBPro that's about one year old. My library is on an external SSD. I notice when I view an image at 100% it is pixelated a for about ten seconds before it loads. Some images load right away. My impression is that images with more edits take longer. I would like to know if this is normal performance.

My preview image size is 2880 pixels.

  How is the drive connected? Over what kind of interface?

  Thank you for responding. I use a MBPro and the drive is connected via USB C.
