Variants, sorting and albums
I want to create new versions of some images in a folder of already processed raws, without affecting the old versions. So I have used the ‘clone variant’ command on each needed file to create new versions to work with.
As these files are spread through the folder, I want to see them all together in the thumb browser in C1. So I colour tag the variants I have just created (I have not tagged the original variants, just the new ones) and sort them by colour tag, expecting all the tagged ones to appear together. They don’t.
The sorting seems to be based on the tagging of the number 1 variant, and all variants of a single file stay together in the thumbnail list, regardless of whether they should be in a different position if they have differing attributes that are being sorted on. Most attributes that you can sort on are obviously the same across a set of variants, but tagging and rating are not always – nor is the processing status which is (I think incorrectly) propagated into the cloned variant.
I consider this sorting behaviour (and the propagation of the processing status when cloning) to be a bug, anyone else think so?
In trying to get round this, and get my new variants to be shown together, I tried dragging the rated variants (only) into an album, and ALL variants ended up in the album. This situation is slightly better, as I only have a few extra variants I don’t want to see, rather than the whole folder full of other files, but I would rather only have the ones I want to see so I can’t accidentally adjust the originals.
I think I should be able to put a single variant into an album without ALL variants of that file going along too. I understand that would not be possible for a physical folder (where would the actual raw file go?), but as albums are logical collections within c1, should that not work as I expect?
I have a nasty feeling that phase 1 are going to say the behaviour I am describing is the result of the physical implementation of the variant coding and can’t sensibly be changed ☹️ , anyone want to comment? Is it worth raising a support case?

Version of CO (and Windows) please? Did you color tag with the same color? 0 -

C1 pro 5.1.2 on windows 7, 64 bit.
Canon 5D files.
I tagged using orange (yes they were all the same!!). Others were not tagged at all. Tried it with star ratings too and got the same result.0 -
I have experienced the same sorting problem with variants also.
Here's something I do when I want to maintain settings while experimenting on something else. For instance, I wanted to create a set of greyscale images, but maintain the original color settings also. Using cloned variants, I tried the color coding and sorting but as we see that doesn't work. So instead I just create a backup copy of the "Settings50" folder and save them as "color." I can then make any changes I want to the primary variants. If I want to I can then back them up to a folder such as "greyscale." I then restore the color folder to get back to the original settings. You can do this all within Windows Explorer.0 -
yes - I’ve done that in the past - before phase 1 invented variants actually! It works buts it’s a bit of a pain, and still leaves me with a folder full raws, most of which I’m not interested in (although it doesn’t then matter if I do accidentally change them).
I’m trying to isolate the subset of files I am interested in so they are easy for me to see and move between, and before I started I was expecting the sorting of variants to achieve that.
The best I have come up with since is to select all the colour tagged files using the menu command (that works as expected – only selecting a variant if it is tagged) and then using the cursor keys to move through the selected files in turn. That still has disadvantages, but at least I don’t have to keep scrolling around looking for the files!0
