what is wrong with my local adjustments
Using C1 version 9.3.0.69 on Macbook Pro 15 with El Capitan. There are just under 2000 files in my catalog. I am not storing the files in the catalog but as separate files on the drive. The files can be up 4 years old. In that time, I have used a variety of tools, including Digikam on Linux. At one point, I also moved my catalog and files from Windows 10 to Os X. Given the different folder structure, I also had to spend time using the Locate function to link the catalog entries with the actual files.
The problem I am seeing is that for some older files, those with local adjustments, I can see the layers named in the adjustments tab, and the adjustments show up in the preview in the Viewer. Also, I can see in the tools area below that edits in the various settings are in force, and see how they change as I jump from one layer to another. Strangely, the settings in each tool are grayed out so I cannot make any further adjustments (so C1 is giving some sort of feedback here that something is amiss). Also, next to layer names, where one should see which type of layer (adjustments, heal, clone), there is nothing (more indecipherable feedback). When in some layer, and I try to view the mask by toggling the M key, no mask appears. Again, regardless, in the viewer I can see the adjustments are in force.
In Preferences, I have tried a variety of options regarding .xmp files, and finally returned to the default setting. Because I used Digikam and others, there are a variety of .xmp files in the folder, including one for the file in question.
What is going on here? How can I recover my adjustments? If I delete all layers and start over, then the local adjustments work again properly? Because the viewer shows the adjustments are still in force, does this mean C1 is reading the .xmp files? If so, how can I grab those edits so they are stored in the catalog again (??that is where all the edits are stored for each file, correct??)?
Admittedly, I have a faulty understanding of how C1 uses .xmp files and then.... 🤭
I have some files to attach to illustrate the issue, but do not see how include attachments in posts.

Are you using a Pro version with a valid license? 0 -
Yes, the pro version, full license.
It would be helpful if anyone has a take on how C1 uses (or uses under which circumstances) .xmp files. Up to now, I supposed that all edits under C1 were stored in the catalog.0 -

well yes and no and maybe 😊
go to settings then locate the tab images
at the bottom you can select to have imp files as a side car file
if there are no imp files in your folder then switch on load or full load
hope this helps you0 -
+Lorenzen well yes and no and maybe 😊
Ok, clear as mud.... 😂
Let me just clarify some of the settings on the Image-tab that pertain to .xmp
Auto Sync Sidecar XMP: if I leave this at <none>, then that means C1 ignores the .XMP. Correct?? And all edits are stored in the catalog???
Prefer Sidecar XMP over Embedded Metadata: I am not sure where this metadata is stored (guessing that it is in the image file and has nothing to do with the edits that I am supposing are stored in the catalog). At any rate, I have left it checked as this is the default.
Does the Image Professor have an article on any of this??
Thanks in advance....0 -

I think (but I'm not sure) that the metadata are not stored in the image file (which is only a RAW file, except for the DNG) but rather in the catalog, together with the edits.0
