Distortion correction on m4/3 lenses (Olympus E-P1+17mm/2.8)
Hi,
I've recently bought C1, after trying the new 4.8.2 version (which was the first to support the my new Olympus PEN E-P1 camera). I was blown away the quality of the RAW conversion performed by C1, particularly after comparing it both with the bundled software and with LR...
With the 14-42mm kit lens, C1 makes wonders and distortion correction is not that important. However, I've just bought the 17mm pancake lens and I was disappointed to see that C1, by doing no distortion correction, leaves the processed images with a rather ugly barrel distortion... The other alternative developers do correct the distortion.
Is this a known issue or is C1 planning to add correction for that lens in a following version? Any tip from more experienced users?

While posting this in the forum, I also filled a support request. The answer was quick:
"Hello
Lens correction is one of the feature in PRO.
It is arguable what feature should be in what version but in this case we have chosen lens correction to be one of the features that is a PRO only to differentiate the two products."
A few words about this:
I understand the need to differentiate C1 from C1PRO, but what the issue is about automatic correction of barrel distortion in micro 4/3 lenses, it is not about introducing in C1 the custom lens correction present in C1Pro.
Capture One cannot seriously support micro 4/3 lenses without it, because barrel distortion is strong in those lenses, presuming software correction. C1 should at least provide the same distortion correction as the camera itself does when generating JPEGs...
If Ulf or someone from PhaseOne is listening, please think twice about this issue.
Aren't other m4/3 users dealing with the same problem?0 -
Adding to my point, see what DPReview wrote on their lens review:
"Software correction of distortion
As with the 14-42mm, the 17mm F2.8 Pancake takes advantage of the Micro Four Thirds system's ability to correct geometric distortion in software. The comparison below illustrates the transformation from the highly barrel-distorted raw image to the properly-corrected final version."

C1 should do this correction to properly support any m43 camera!0 -
The lack of response from other users may hint that I'm the only one concerned enough with this issue to bother writing about it, but I've just come across another point on my argument:
"One of the more controversial aspects of the Micro Four Thirds system is Panasonic's decision to integrate software lens aberration correction as a fundamental component of the imaging chain (which the company has unfortunately chosen not to publicly document)."
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/panason ... page17.asp
So, Capture One should indeed automatically correct geometrical distortion when supporting m4/3 cameras... It's a nice growing market nice and C1 has so many good arguments in its favor, so please don't cripple it with this lacking feature.0 -
I was disappointed to see that the new CaptureOne 5, even in the PRO version, doesn't account for this. There are no profiles for m4/3 lenses, so the only option is to manually adjust distortion correction for each image or group of images... Would it be so hard to implement some auto correction like ACR&LR do? ☹️ 0 -
Hi -- I was wondering if you had received any word about lens correction for the E-P1 or E-P2. I just processed some raw E-P2 images in the new C1Pro 5 release today. Compared them with LR3 and Aperture 3. Still no lens correction for C1 Pro on the E-P2. But both LR3 and Aperture 3 corrected the images. Both those apps also presented the images in the correct ratios I used for the capture (6:6, 2:3, 4:3). Would be great if C1 Pro was able to also do that.
Thanks.[quote="Rui Grilo" wrote:

Do a feature request in a support case and it will be processed into the proper channels within Phase One.0 -
I have decided NOT to upgrade from Capture One Express 5.2 to 6.1 because of this problem.
I have Olympus PEN E-P2 and Panasonic Lumix 14/2.5 - the barrel distortion is terrible.
IMNSHO should PhaseOne include this feature to Express version as other vendors do.
Another reason NOT to upgrade is, that I feel FORCED to upgrade because of the support for Olympus E-5, which was not added to the in the time of E-5 introduction current C1 version - version 5.
I like C1 very much, I started using V4 and I am still using it besides V5.2, but despite this I am considering to switch to other software because of this two problems.
