How to run two versions of CO8 without activation issues
I want to run Version 8.1.1 and also version 8.2.1.5. I do not wish to purchase another licence and I do not want the hassle of going through the deactivation reactivation process every time I want to switch. After all I am only going to run 1 version at a time.
Any thoughts?

Hi
In theory, multiple builds can be installed (renamed to unique programs) and only need to be each activated once. It only counts as one activation as it is one machine. It's what we do in test and support for betas and regression testing.
In your case (8.1.1+ 8.2.1) this is not advisable without careful consideration about what you use in what, as you have a document migration involved. This means the 8.2.1 version sessions/catalogs can not be read by older versions of 8 once migrated.
You might also run into issues going backward with settings files where no adjustment exists in 8.1.1 - for example the color balance tool.
If this is for the sake of testing, copy the session/catalog and work on the copy. Just make sure to open the right copy in the right build.0 -
Grant K,
If you only need 8.1.1 to resolve the tethering process issue you mentioned in another thread (did I remember that correctly?) and plan to do all post tethering edits in 8.2.x then you should be able to segregate the operations well enough (I think) to make it work.
Obviously you can only have one instance of the program running on a machine at any one time to that would mean 8.1.1 whilst shooting then shut it down and open 8.2.x for processing if 8.1.1 does not give you what you need.
As I recall this was likely to be a temporary approach pending whatever comes out later ...?
There are some shared settings and non-share features, as Jim pointed out, that might cause a few issues to be aware of just in case they come into play but in theory you should be OK as outlined. I am assuming that Mac works as Windows does in that respect.
HTH.

Thank you James and Grant P,
[Some one mentioned that their were too many Grants. I thought it was funny. I will go by Grant K from now on to avoid confusion]
Yes I only want to shoot in version 8.1.1 and then I will migrate the files to version 8.2.1.5. I do not need to take these files back to an older version. - At least as long as Live View doesn't work in 8.2.1.5.
BTW I actually do take files back to CO7 on an older machine. I strip out all the side cars and start a new session dropping my Raw files into the new Capture folder [using the older CO7 version]. Works fine.
So my question is how do I get the newer version out of the 30day trial mode. How can I activate both versions?0 -

Just activate 8.2 via your account login as normal using your V8 activation code. That will take 8.2 out of the trial state. You can run earlier versions on the same activation since a single machine will not run more than one C1 instance at a time.
