    I could be misunderstanding but I think this does what you want:

    At the far right of the words CATALOG FOLDERS in the Organize panel there is an icon of a lightning bolt (it's small.)

    Click on it for a drop-down of choices, then select Union of Folder Hierarchies.

    The numbers next to your folders change to include a number in parentheses of ALL images in that folder including subfolders. Clicking the dot next to the number shows you all images in the folder including subfolders.

    Off topic... Roelof, how did you change the background color in the Organize panel? I see the swatches in the View window which lets me change colors for the main viewing area, but not the Organize / Info panels! What am I missing?

    It's the default interface in EM
