a few ?'s from a newbie
Hello-
I am a newbie when it comes to using photo editing software- but I have a basic understanding of the basics I think- I have used photo shop and elements and Canon software for working on my images in raw and when converted to jpgs-
I have downloaded Capture One 7 pro trial and will probably end up using it - but I have a few general questions- Please do not laugh 😊
If I understand correctly - with Capture One 7 you work with import the raw files into the program and they are stored in a Catalog and from there you can add many levels to that catalog-
When you make edits or adjustments to the raw file, the original file is not actually changed correct? , rather the changes are saved as a "working image"....and you can choose to make another copy of this "working image" which is called a Variant and start making changes again and keeping the first edited photo ? , this is a little confusing to me.
On a video I watched I understood that if you were to import images edited in another program they might import with the changes that were applied within the other program to the original photo - I get this..... However, if I were to edit a raw image in Capture One 7 and export it as a jpg, it will retain the changes that I have made in Capture One 7, correct? If I then take that picture into Photo Shop, the edits made in Capture One 7 would still be there correct ? But if I were to export the photo from Capture One 7 as a raw file, then changes would not carry over if it were opened up in Photo Shop or Light Room , correct? ....... I am just trying to understand this better so that I keep it straight.
In Capture One 7 can you adjust the image size before it is exported? Or do you do so at the time of export?
and lastly, in Capture One 7 can you remove and replace items in a photo as you can in Photo Shop? I'm not sure if Capture One 7 is used for this or not like photo shop. If not, I presume that certain things would be done to a photo in Capture One 7 then it would be exported as what type of file to be imported by another graphics program such as Photo shop or whatever?
Thank you in advance for your patience and bearing with me as I learn more about this amazing program.

- You do not import "into the program", you import to a location on your computer (either a folder or within Catalog). You can then use access the folders where they reside to apply edits.[quote="NN635195276761570080UL" wrote:

- Capture One sees your RAW file and shows you what it looks like with your adjustments applied, it does not edit the RAW but simply shows a Preview of what an exported file (JPEG, TIFF) will look like when exported/processed.[quote="NN635195276761570080UL" wrote:

- Capture One does not edit the RAW, so the RAW stays the same regardless of what program opens it or when another program opens it. Processed/Exported files (TIFF or JPEG) are copies of the RAW in a different format that have your adjustments applied to them. They are separate files and exist exactly as they look, so all other software will simply open them and honor their appearance.[quote="NN635195276761570080UL" wrote:

- At the time of export as a RAW has no "fixed" size.[quote="NN635195276761570080UL" wrote:

- Some small things like Dust and Spot removal but not to the extent that Photoshop can. For example we have no Clone, Heal, Warp, Distort, etc options.0 -
Drew-
Thank you so much for your reply. This really helps me to better understand what the program is all about and how it works with the files.
I was a bit confused before your reply, but now it is clear to me.
My subjects are jewelry in promoting my jewelry company and I feel that Capure One 7 will help make the initial edits to the raw file much easier and more exact than if I were to use another program. There are a lot of programs to choose from and I would imagine it's a matter of which one a user is accustomed to working wtih.
Other than the videos are there any other tutorials or books or on line courses that go over using the Capture One 7 in more detail that you could direct me to?
Thank you-

Hello Art,
very very important is to understand the principle of non-destructive image editing, which is the basis of all raw-editing. With this a raw file is kept untouched and is not stored in any database, but the image manipulations or edited metadata (keywords, labels, rankings, ...) are stored separately in the editor database or in sidecar files as text information. Also when editing JPG or other image files, good raw editors (C1, LR) do not edit the original files. You always have to export your modified image (WYSIWYHTE = What You See Is What You Have To Export).
Only for special fileformats (JPG, DNG, TIFF, PNG, ...) there is a special case, that text metadata or even an embedded preview can be even updated in these files directly from the raw editor. A good raw editor software like C1 or LR does allow you to enable/disable such original file modifications. Note that the original raw image data will not be changed (non destructive!).
However some users like to prevent any modifications and set appropriate software settings or make the original files read-only. I do this, because I do not like proprietary or any other metadata from raw editors to be placed in my DNG files. Others like this DNG update, because you can exchange image manipulations with other users (who use the same raw software) and you can see the update preview or keywords, labels, rankings, ... directly in this and other software.
When you need further image manipulations after raw editing with C1 (e.g. PhotoShop) you have to plan a careful workflow. For example you can export from C1 the files in TIFF format. JPG is not recommended, because it is lossy. And you have to take care, that you do edit these exports with PhotoShop only if you are sure about what you do. Today it is not possible to do raw image manipulations in C1 or LR and continue this raw editing in Photoshop based on the same raw file.
