I haven't tried that scenario yet, but will need to.

I'm thinking that I'll want to create a new catalog on the trip and import that into the base catalog upon return.

If I import to the base catalog and the copy that catalog back, the images will be left behind. Or so it would seem.

You can work with photos using proxies even if you are away from your NAS.

I recently purchased a Macbook Pro laptop. It is my understanding that I can copy my catalog to the laptop and take that out in the field and have access to the previews of all of my images (but not the original files unless I take the hard drive). Is that correct?
    - and this is 100% correct.

I am doing almost the same thing as you do with your workflow. I shoot catalog in a field but store files outside catalog. And this is extra important. Then coming back I relocate files on NAS.
