Relocating folder tree with referenced images in a catalogue
I must be stupid but I could not find anywhere a simple clear recipe to move in a catalogue a folder/subfolder tree with referenced images to another location (other disk or other location on the same disk).
1) Inside C1 one can only move images, not folders to other locations. I don't want to do this, since there are too many sub- and sub-subfolders.
2) If I move or copy the top folder with the images in the Finder to another location and restart C1, the images are shown as question marks. When I apply the locate command to the top folder, it adds the folder structure at the new location, but not the images, which are in sub- and sub-subfolders. Only when go to each of the sub-subfolders and apply the locate command to each of them, do the images get recognised and shown as online again.
What have I missed here? Is there not a simple way to relocate a folder tree with referenced images to another location? The only workaround I see at the moment is to open a new catalogue and import the old image folder tree (with subfolders) and use the "Import To" feature to to place the images in a new folder tree at the new location. But with this I'd loose all adjustments I had made to the images in the old catalogue.
I can't understand this - isn't this a standard scenario if e.g. your disk gets full and you purchase a new disk?

I have the same problem...
I transfered my catalog and folders to another hdd and it seems i have to show the correct file path for all my images one by one. Come on..0 -
You are correct, there is no facility for the renaming/moving of folders from within Capture One
I submitted a support case in February for this to be a feature enhancement. The response I received was not very encouraging:Hi,
We are working to improve workflow with regards to the Library tool in Catalogs in upcoming versions. Thanks for your input.
Perhaps if more people raise support cases for this facility, it will be given a higher priority?

So the 'Locate...' command only works in a limited way and can't cope with a large folder / file structure? Not good news and another possible nail in C1Ps coffin for me. Just glad I've not ditched Lightroom entirely though I'll be sad to lose the image quality that C1P offers. 0 -
Have come across the same issue as you, and think I've found a work around. Not overly streamlined.
It seems that C1 responds better if you drag and drop the images themselves from the old folder to the new location inside C1. That then does the "locate" change we are after. How you manage that workflow is an interesting one though.
Guess for now it's:
- Create your folder structure on the new location but not have the RAW files in your desired referenced folder.
- Do the "locate" command so that new folder appears in the Library.
- Then drag the old (supposedly missing) files to the new location. That seems to do the trick as it copies the files over to the new location and recreates the reference links.
That "locate" command looks to do what we are after, but seems to miss one major aspect of the re-locate function - update the links.0 -
I have thousand's of images, hence can't drag them myself by hand from one location to another.
I posed my question directly to the support of Phase One. After some time I got the answer that they are working on this problem and I should wait until version 9.1.1 comes out...0 -
This is yet another example of the abysmal stupidity of the C1 development team. Catalogs are simply a hack on top of sessions. Sessions work as intended and well, but don't meet the need for centralized, searchable storage of a large body images.
Folders, even in a catalogs, are no more than collections. They display in a separate section of the library tool, but they are implemented as collections. What this means is that when you import pictures, you import the individual files. These files are automatically made part of several collections: All Images, Recent Imports, and the folder (which contains the images). But, folder is not a physical concept to C1. If you delete or move the folder, the images still exist in the catalog in any of the other collections (including others you may have created).
So, relocating a folder as you have done just creates a new collection, which starts out empty. While the old collection (named for a folder on your drive) may not be in the catalog anymore, the images are--with warnings because their physical location is not known to the catalog any more. So, you have to relocate all the images. Are we having fun yet? You could create a new folder, and then select and drag ALL of the images from the old location to the new in the library tool while working in Capture One. This will do what you are intending to do and reasonably quickly, but the procedure of moving the folder with all of its contents may seem more natural, is consistent with finder or file manager (Win), and nearly all other products that deal in folders. Not in Denmark, apparently.
It's not a bug; it's the design. Pretty stupid, huh?0 -
I am in the same boat. Have all my 23.000+ masters neatly organized in folders and subfolders on an external disk, and now I want to move them inside the catalog.
I acquired a new MAC with much larger HDD and can easily store them on the MAC.
In the mean time we are in 9.2.1 and it still does not seem to be possible.
Did I miss something? Is there a plausible work around?
And dear PhaseOne, if this feature is not available, which I cannot image of a high quality product , what do YOU suggest I do?0 -
I came across this thread hoping to find an answer to a similar issue I am having. All of my folder structure is located on my Mac and I would like to relocate it to an external hard drive. It can't be this difficult? Tried dragging within C1 but it didn't allow to move the folders. Any ideas? 0
