Server Based Catalog Speed is Slow

Here is what I do on a windows server.

*Know how to use the sync center or offline files utility for older OS.
*Configure all machines to use offline files (wireless or wired) and mark all image folders to be "available offline."
*Make sure wired network machines sync automatically (on log on/off, etc.).
*Do not ever work with remote images on a live network connection. Even gigabit is too slow.
*To work in Media Pro, first disable your nic so the machine will work with offline files. For desktops, just put a LAN shortcut (for the used nic) on the desktop. When disconnected, Windows (7 at least) knows to re-enable it on-click so it is very fast.

    Hope this answers.

Buggy site! What's with my username? Login was an ordeal with chrome!

Does anyone know what the official recommendation for images on a server is? Is access to the remote catalog file (on a server) discouraged?

You can set your screen name via your preferences on the web site.

Let's say that the official recommendation is to not have the images on a network. It does work, but you could run into some peculiar behaviour sometimes.

I tend to keep my "live" images on my system's hard disk, my archive is on a NAS.

Login from main site is bugged out. Fields don't display correctly. Using chrome with a few addons and W7 so who knows. Can't find a place on the forum control panel to show my display name.

My whole catalog needs to be "live," otherwise I would drop the whole sync disconnect/connect approach. It seems pretty reliable and free of performance issues as long as I don't close the app while (mistakenly) reading a file from the server.

Run the catalog locally and put the files on the server.
Media Pro doesn't work well over a network...but it can retrieve the images over one.
I keep the updated catalogs on the server for download. Users download and search catalogs on their machine. If they are logged on to the server they can download usually with no problem. (sometimes the catalog needs the paths reset after download)
If they make changes to the catalog it comes back to me. If approved then it is merged with the master catalog and uploaded to the server file.
