Importing keywords from Aperture

Orwell: I don't have an answer to your first paragraph question about why C1 is flattening your Aperture keyword hierarchy, but perhaps I have a clue derived from my use of Photo Mechanic ("PM").

C1 reads and maintains the PM keywords written using PM's "Structured Keywords" dialog box as hierarchical. PM's hierarchical keywords are separated using the pipe "|" key---not a comma "," .

So, perhaps the problem lies in the "separator" Aperture uses. Maybe Aperture uses a "comma"? Perhaps that is the cause? I would check to see if there is an Aperture keyword preference setting to change Aperture's keyword separator to the pipe "|" key. If so, I would change to that and see if the hierarchy is preserved.

    Hope that's some help.

Thanks for the suggestion FirstName. However, I don't think that really works here. Aperture stores keyword information in a relational database, so delimiters aren't relevant.

If flattening the keyword hierarchy using Capture 1's Aperture import feature is expected behavior, I need a way to reassemble that hierarchy. I think I could do that if I could find a way to batch delete keywords.

I don't suppose the conversion has knowledgable access to the KW part of the database with links in place.

Can you export the HKW to a text file of some sort? It should be possible to do something from there if you can.

Or, maybe, if you have loaded the Keyword without hierarchy you can recreate the hierarchy dragging and dropping words? Tedious but might be faster than looking for an automated approach?

That's exactly what I'm trying to do. I can create the new hierarchy and assign all of my photos to the new hierarchy, but how do I remove all the old keywords?

For example, in Aperture I might have the following:
    Landscapes
    Forests

In Capture One, after the import, I have:
    Landscapes
    Forests

If I add "Landscapes > Forests" to all of the photos with "Landscapes" and "Forests", I now have the following:
    Landscapes
    Forests
    Landscapes
    Forests

I now need to strike the first two keywords or I'll end up with an even bigger mess than I have now. So I need a way to go through thousands of photos and strike a keyword without having to click on each photo one at a time.

    Ah, OK.

I was wondering if the redefinition might generate the links internally.

As I recall this has been raised before and the suggested response was to set up an image with the KWs you want than copy and paste to the other that require the same. I can see that working in some situations and failing in others.

It's possible there may be some work going on in this area so it would be worth creating a Support Case which might provide some more input.

However I have to say I would not want to take on a 60k image keyword project if there was any potential for fixing the problem as part of a final conversion (you mention that this is a test conversion....) so you might ask about that too.

    HTH.

Changing by hand in one image:
    Architectural, Church
    in Aperture into:
    | Architectural | Church

created a nice hierarchical KW structure in C1. I had to remove the "," between the two in Aperture.

But how to automate this ? Should be done in Aperture...

    Here's a more thorough explanation:
