Does RAW import rely on apple drivers
I am trying to import Nikon D850 raw Nef files, but I'm using a version of the Mac OS (Sierra) that doesn't support it (I have an older Mac). Capture One 12 is loaded on my machine. Does the import capabilities of Capture One rely on the native mac importers or do they roll their own?
Thanks,
Jeffrey
BTW: I've NEVER understood why you always need to upgrade the operating system, just to add new camera support on a Mac. There is little reason that these drivers can't be somewhat backward compatible.

No problem. If your version of Capture One works with your current OS, you can import pictures from any camera supported by that version of Capture One.
The only problem comes when a new version of Capture One is no longer supported by your OS : you must then upgrade your OS or stay with an older version of Capture One.
It is very likely that Capture One 13 won't be supported by Sierra, as Sierra is the oldest OS version able to support C1 version 12.0 -
It's not just the drivers. More and more vendors are doing like Apple and only supporting 2 OS versions back. It's sad, but that seems to be the ecosystem Apple wants to support.
In addition to drivers, there are lots of subroutines that Apple updates in the OS, and if an app's using Swift, a current version of Swift only supports 2 OS versions back. I doubt that C1's using Swift, but still, they've apparently decided to offer older support like Apple does. TurboTax is another program that does the same.0 -

Are you referring strictly to C1 or to some other software?
I believe Apple includes (or may be I should say used to include?) raw image support in the operating system. Some applications take/took advantage of the OS support for raw images. Thus, new camera models need OS update. I don't know if or how C1 depends on the raw image support embedded in the Mac OS.
I use Windows, a Mac user may hopefully fill inn the blanks here.0 -
Nop, we use our own rendering, one of the great features of Capture One. 0 -

That is what I thought. When a C1/Mac user is prompted to update the operating system for new cameras, that prompt is triggered by the Apple system itself or some installed third party application(s) other than C1?0 -

What updates are you referring to? Capture One updates? Apple’s raw lib updates?0 -

I was probably not explicit enough, sorry.
I used the word update, the OP used the word upgrade in his first message:

Is C1 the source of that Mac world annoyance or is it something else?0 -
Sounds like it's another program giving you those update dialog boxes. C1 on the Mac is evidently using it's own RAW interpreters, so it doesn't need you to update the OS to use your new camera (unless the a new version of C1 itself needs a newer OS version to work in general.) 0
