Limitations to opening TIFFs?
Hello.
I'm currently evaluating the latest release of Capture One. Generally I'm very impressed with the software but I have come up against a problem relating to opening TIFFs.
I frequently work with large 16 bit TIFFs up to about 1GB in size (no Alpha layer, not compressed). Capture One doesn't recognize most of these files and so thumbnails are not generated.
For some reason a 16 bit TIFF of about 423 MB is recognized and opened but another similar file, but of 660 MB, is not. If I convert the latter to 8 bit, it is recognized and opened.
My question is: is there a built in limit to the size (dimensions or bytes) or type of TIFF files that may be used?
Possibly connected to this is the crashing of Capture One if any NEFs created from the large TIFF files are present in a folder.
Thanks for any help. I will be very glad if Capture One is able to fit my work flow.
Peter

Hi,
Yes, there is a size limitation (either in MB or in pixels, not sure) for opening TIFFs in CO6. I do not have the specifics, I recall Drew or other Phase One staff has mentioned it in detail here recently.
A NEF from TIFF? No, will not open in CO6, only NEFs from camera. I suspect a NEF from TIFF is not raw and a Nikon-owned specification.0 -
Thanks Paul.
Following your message I did a more thorough search.
There seems to be some confusion as to whether TIFF file size and/or dimensions limit TIFF loading and that those limits are changing.
Jon stated:

The last time I tested it the maximum size tiff/jpeg that Capture One will display is 7843x7848. 16bit or 8 bit does not make the difference. We have to limit it because it takes a lot more power and memory to load processed files than it does raw files.
I last did the test in Capture One 5 so it is possible that it has changed since then."
And later:
"New postby Jon » Thu May 31, 2012 7:18 pm
Jpeg and Tiff files might not show if they have layers or some nonstandard formatting. Also if they are extremely large in size they may get excluded as well. The pixel limit is about 13400x13400 total pixels."
In my experience whether the image is 8 or 16 bit does make a difference. Also, am wondering if it is possibly the total pixel count that may be the key rather than height and width.
Jon stated that loading TIFFs is limited because it requires more power and memory. In my opinion, those of us who work with very large TIFFs will readily except that and will want to be able to load such images. Especially so with modern CPUs and RAM.
Presently I would like to be able to load 16 bit TIFFs up to about 1 GB.
Is the "release" of the current limitation a simple parameter change in the code?
Regards
Peter
PS Yes, a NEF from a TIFF (or JPEG) is not a RAW but perhaps Capture One shouldn't crash when it strikes one.0 -
Hi Peter,
Regarding the NEF created from TIFF, preventing a crash makes perfect sense. Open a support case with Phase One, attack such a file and request for a more gentle handling of the file type by CO 6.
In addition, you could request either information about the size limitation and/or extending the limit.0 -

Thanks for the suggestion Paul.
I'll follow it up.
