Mac Pro 5,1 is Mid 2010, isn't it? That's what I have; the 2.8 GHz Quad Core.
I just got this card and the performance improvement under Mavericks is truly impressive.

I tested with Yosemite as well, but there are still issues. No complaints here as it isn't officially supported yet.

    Here are my numbers:
    Mid 2010 Mac Pro
    2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    16 GB RAM

Developing 100 Nikon D810 NEFs to full res JPEGs.

    Yosemite
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU off: 11’ 13†= 673"
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU on: 5’ 17†= 317"
    Sapphire HD 7950 GPU on: 4’ 39†= 279â€

    Mavericks
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU off: 10’ 12†= 612"
    ATI Radeon HD 5770 GPU on: 5’ 12†= 312"
    Sapphire HD 7950 GPU on: 2’ 11†= 131"

Hope this helps. BTW, if you're in the US, Other World Computing will take your old ATI card for $140 which brings down the Sapphire's price to $350. A no-brainer. 😊

    Get the card.

Thanks Thomas for the times/ Mavericks vs Yosemite.
I wish I hadn't "upgraded" to Yosemite. I have had issues with not being able to utilize the GPU in C1.

    Thanks Thomas & Jimmy,

Yes my machine is a mid 2010.
Sounds like the Sapphire HD 7950 is a go..!
Unfortunately I'm not in the US, but I will probably get the card from OWC anyhow..

I just got this card recommended over the HD 7950: AMD ATI Radeon R9 280X 3GB
It comes flashed from create.pro and should be plug and play. Price wise it is a little more but not that much..

Anyone got experience with that card?

I ended up getting a HD 7950 and just installed it and turned on Open CL and am happy to report that everything seems to be running smoothly now.
As a side bonus the whole machine seems more snappy now, in web browsing and finder and such. Even the cursor seems to have more energy now 😊

    Thanks everyone..
