masking/luma masks
Hi - So far I only post images online. I'm afraid that if I enlarged & printed an image with masks, the flaws would show up. I find it hard to do highly accurate masks, although they are fine for online, but not if I zoom in a lot. I'm still on version 11. Are the luma masks in 12 accurate & easy to use? Thanks.

What kind of thing are you wanting to mask? Can you give us an example or two of the sort of thing you are hoping to achieve?

I'm more just thinking in general Ian, nothing specific comes to mind. Over the years I have used masks a lot for creative work as well as fixing images. People have suggested framing some of my images but I'm not sure they would hold up. Nothing so detailed as an animal's fur like in one of the tutorials, but more abstract than a straight line. A buoy in the water comes to mind...not sure how to post an image here. 0 -
So thinking of your example of the buoy in the water - do you want to remove it, change its colour, darken or lighten it...?
Also it occurs to me that precision in masking (unless you want to do the sort of thing you were talking of such as selecting round an animal's fur) is often not such a good thing. It is usually better to have a feathered edge to a mask, precisely so that when the image is inspected closely it is not obvious that any masking has been used.
Luma ranges applied to a mask can be quite subtle, if you learn how to use the fall-off, radius and sensitivity controls. There are some tutorials on it on the Capture One YouTube channel.
You could also try version 12 as a free trial for 30 days and see how you get on. It would be wise to create a new v12 session or catalog to play with some images in so that you do not end up irreversibly converting existing sessions or catalogs should you decide not to go ahead with the update.

thanks Ian. I've been saving the tuts for version 12 in case I upgrade. For the bouy, I recently cut it out & pasted into another image in Affinity. It worked, at least at the level of online photos. I do feathering often & didn't realize that would still hold up if i enlarge an image. Good idea! 0
