It seems the support for auto-masking will not come.
Will the Create Masked Layer From Selection option in the Color Editor work for Fuji X-Trans files? It may be a work-around in some circumstances.
The Fuji limitations are the only thing stopping me from moving out of Lightroom. I use auto-masking the whole time.

I can garantee (and as a tester, I do not use this word a lot) you that nothing has been done to make CO 8 slower. We simply have no interest in doing so.
i can just tell you what i saw on my MAC ,... my C1 8 is now really playing Beach Ball ❗️
my bee there is some daemon software for Licensing which keep running at the background, and makes it slow down ,
i am traing now on my imac the demo for C1 9.
otherwise i saw that in the C1 9 there is moor speed added to, " Sorry Phase One" this should bee fixed in the C1 8 before.0 -
I just bought version 8 on sept 23. Its wasn’t functional with my Pentax k3ii for over a month and now its crashing when I’m trying to import several thousand images. Phaseone is refusing to allow me to update to version 9 which appears to be more stable & would fix the stability problems I have been having. This too short of a window-especially when I couldn’t use the software for the first month because of lack of k3 ii support & after having stability problems. People with Version 7 pay the same price as 8 & had the use for of the software for years. This very poor customer relations & will enter in to my recommendations for use/non-use in our organization.
Update: I was surprised in ver 8 how every limited the number of pretax lenses supported for lens corrections-only 7 lenses-
guess what? no change for version 9. The selection of lenses supported is very poor- 5 of pentax's limited lenses & 1 basic that comes with the camera & the 100 macro. None of the core working lenses that the majority of photographers would use. At this point I have to question the value of upgrading- especially scene i paid full price just a short time ago.0 -
I've just tested CO9 on my iMac 5K (late 2015, 8GB Ram, 4GHz). The brush is very laggy and painfully slow. I hope that will be fixed on the new updates, if it isn't due to my hardware. I didn't have this problem on 8.3.4
Also now I've upgraded my catalogue to 9, I can't go back. Is there a way to do or am I stuck with V9?
Cheers,
Fatih0 -

I have found it, but V8 doesn't open the backup properly. All the files have a ? on them and I can't see the pictures. And then the app crashes unexpectedly ☹️0 -

Don't you backup your data before upgrading software?
And in case you didn't, CaptureOne also makes backups of the database.
See preferences > general > catalog backup.
Not sure what the official suggested workflow is to replace the database with a backup version. The catalog is just an OS X package and with 'Show package content' you can display the files. The database is the file with the cocatalogdb extension. So, to role back to a C1 8 compatible version, it should be enough to replace it with a version from before the upgrade.0 -
As I didn't assume it will convert my catalogue, I haven't backed up. Also I haven't converted any picture to V9. But lesson leanrt.
Found the CO backups though, software is processing something, hopefully it will be able to see the files.0 -

On another note, if I disable openCL, it is as fast as V8.3.40 -

I just rolled back to 8 myself by replacing the database file in the catalog and all is fine.0 -
Drew,
I purchased Capture One Pro 8 for SONY on November 22, 2015 and now on November 30, 2015 I am told it going to cost met he same amount of USdollars to Capture One Pro 9. I feel I should be have been offered the option to wait the one week to purchase C1 Pro 9.0 -
The upgrade to C1 9 will be free for you, backgroundgeo, just contact support. 0 -
For early adopters & OS X beta users.
Upgraded to 9.0 this morning without any issues. Was running OS X 10.11.2 Public Beta 4.
Installed OS X 10.11.2 Public BETA 5 this evening and I experienced some issues. I sent an email to C1 saying the application continued to be un-responsive when 'opened'. I had rebooted a few times and the application would not open.
After about 2 more reboots... C1 9.0.0 opened & ran. ( C1 version8 also ran but informed be that I had upgraded 1 catalog to 9.0 and it couldn't be opened, other that hadn't be upgraded opened OK.
confirmed running:
Capture One 9.0.0.110
iMac (Mid 2011) 32GB, OS X 10.11.2 Beta 5 (15C48a) and also on Public Beta 40 -

A month, in the cycle of a software, is certainly not very little. Regardless, please contact support and plead your case. It won't hurt to ask.[quote="mikekatz" wrote:

No, it will not. This is not a decision we have arbitrarily made, it is a limitation of the RAW file and Fuji's rather complicated Bayer Filter. I am sorry but the Fuji Restrictions, as noted in the release notes, are inherent to the file and will remain this way in Capture One.0 -

I wonder how Adobe is able to implement Auto-Masking for Fuji RAWs, if the files are so limited!?
This is a really bad excuse in my opinion - why don't you just say, that you wont give that topic any resources because of reason XY?
It's really a shame, because C1 is one of the best X-Trans RAW converters when it comes to X-Trans demosaicing and the overall look. I suppose that many Fuji photographers are also PhaseOne customers.0 -
I bought my license for c1 8 late enough to get a free update to 9, thanks to the support. Now I hope to get more informations here in the forum to learn more about the possibilities of C1 9. What I have read sounds very interesting. 0 -
Hi
Have downloaded 9 and it works great. Still have 8 as well as the same SN can be used for both. How do I copy all my workspace data and user presets to 9?
Thanks

I have given you the reason, the exact reason. This is not an excuse it is a limitation.
Adobe does not handle the RAW files in the same way and this is evident in editing/processing the images.
I apologize if the answer I've provided is not the answer you wish to hear but it is in fact accurate and honest. The features will not come due to the limitations present in the RAW files unique characteristics with the Bayer Filter. This is not an excuse, this is specifically the "XY" reason you have requested.0 -

No need to import/copy data. This will be done automatically as Capture One 9 simply references the same location that the files were saved in Capture One 8.0 -
That's not what has happened with me. I download the dmg file from your site and opened it. The app to drag to the app folder is called capture one 9.. so my capture pro 8 app was not written over. When I open 9 its like a new app. None of my work-spaces or presets are there?
Did I do something wrong?0 -
Sorry!
When it loads for the first time it loads the default workspace. However my saved workspaces and presets are all still there.
I'm still testing this new app but the speed is great so far 😊 I hope it stays that way!
Thanks!0 -

Adobe does not handle the RAW files in the same way and this is evident in editing/processing the images.
So in the end the main reason is, that your RAW handling isn't as flexible like the Adobe handling.
Or you won't find solutions to optimize your RAW handling to be more flexible. (e.g. working in a jpeg preview for the masking adjustments, and only apply them on the RAW while exporting)[quote="Drew" wrote:

Yes, it's not the answer I wanted to hear.
Because I know that there are RAW developers out there that can handle the Fuji RAWs for auto-masking.
So in fact it CAN'T be a limitation of the files itself - it must be a limitation of the software, if one can handle it, and the other can't.
On the opposite everyone knows, that Lightroom had serious problems with the demosaicing of the Fuji RAWs for a long time - and still has - while other RAW converters like C1 or Irident Developer deliver a far better quality with the Fuji RAWs out of the box.
That's also a Software issue, and not a RAW issue.
But Adobe at least constantly improves Fuji RAW handling, while you just say "it's the fault of the RAW file".
So in the end it would be possible for you to resolve that Problem, but it would probably mean to spend a lot of resources in it - what might not pay off in the end.
Don't get me wrong.
I really like C1 as a Software. The Interface is great, the Image Quality is great. The available tools are great, but honestly there is still a lot that can be improved (like in every other software too), things that other Apps can do better.0 -
Hi Drew
The second part of my question is:
Will the Create Masked Layer From Selection option in the Color Editor work for Fuji X-Trans files? It may be a work-around in some circumstances.0 -
I purchased the upgrade and installed v9 on my 2011 iMac last night.
C1 v9 starts up quicker than v8. So far, so good! I'm hopeful that it won't crash or get stuck during start up later on.
The Luma curve and the mask creation based on color selection using the color editing tool is absolutely brilliant! 😄 Love it! I haven't experimented much with the updated basic conversion functions like contrast, saturation, etc. If it only got better then I'm sure I'll discover these differences soon.I think I will only really notice the updated engine when I have a really tough DNG to work with.
Regular brush performance and operation is also improved when using my Huion display tablet. I no longer seem to have to move the cursor up to my toolbar and back to reset the function. It was weird in v8. I would have to "cycle" the tool up and down like this after every brush stroke. The Airbrush functions works really, really slow! ☹️ Not sure why. It takes many seconds to complete one stroke. Kind of like watching the world in super slow motion.
Overall, I think this is a step in the right direction!0 -

Thanks for your passionate inquiry hifimacianer.
Unfortunately I'm afraid the answer you're looking for is a bit more complex than a Forum post will satisfy. If you're ever in Copenhagen feel free to stop by and we can have an in-depth discussion regarding RAW format and image core processing.
We'll also be able to shed some light on a bit of the information missing from your references to Adobe.
The short answer is that the Fuji X-trans sensors are atypical to all others and require a completely different method to properly be read when it comes to the very few tools that we are unable to offer with these files. We do everything possible for the Fuji X-Trans, even to the point of working closely with Fuji to offer support that is quite a bit better than the alternative. What Adobe do, and what you perceive as superior, would be best explained by Adobe.
For now and the foreseeable future, the options you wish to use in Capture One that we cannot offer, will remain unsupported due to the design of that specific RAW files structure.0 -

I am sorry if my questions sounded a bit too rude - it wasn't meant that way.
You are doing incredible work when it comes to Image quality and I really like the GUI of C1 too (as a Aperture switcher).
And I also appreciate that you are handling the X-Trans files so good (in terms of IQ).
Thats why I will always prefer C1 over Lightroom, and many Fuji users do the same.
In fact I don't know how Adobe does the auto-masking for X-Trans, but it seems to work somehow.
Well, I know that this is the only plus for Lightroom for X-Trans files, while having many negatives in comparison to C1.[quote="Drew" wrote:

I know that X-Trans files are different, they have a lot of positives, but of course also some negatives.
Fuji related forums are full of threads to look for the best RAW converter for X-Trans - and C1 is always mentioned to one of the better ones! And that's the reason why I like C1 - the general Image Quality "out of the box", and the very good X-Trans handling!
But your answer above sounds reasonable to me. You would have to completely rework your general file handling (that is probably the reason for your good IQ), to implement these tools for X-Trans.
So yes, it is because the Files are different, but it is also because it would probably be a compromise in IQ if you would rework your RAW handling for that.[quote="Drew" wrote:

I never said that Lightroom is superior (in general), I just said that they managed it to implement auto-masking for X-Trans. They have still many downsides in terms of X-Trans rendering, but also in terms of general IQ compared to C1.[quote="alececco" wrote:

Why don't you mind your own Business?
Do you always tell the people to use another software, if they want features that are actually not implemented?
The forum is full of feature requests, or complaints about certain things (like speed).
Should they all use another software, because they are not satisfied with some things in C1?
There is no software that perfect and can suit all.
I really like C1 for it's leading IQ and the user Interface, but yes, there are things they can improve for my taste.
And that's why I asked for it.0
