Migrate from C1
I like Capture One 8 very much but I have a question related to the future. If I decide to migrate from C1 to another software program, can I export my catalog in some way? I keep my photos "in catalog" right now, not referenced.
I guess I'm only bringing this up because I feel burned by Apple dropping Aperture and Adobe going subscription on most of their products. You never know about the future but I would hate to have to go through contortions to get control of my photos.

Well that depends on what app you would be using
but if you chose lightroom i guess you do it but none of your adjustments in Raw files would come over
i am only guessing0 -
I think we all learned from the Aperture migration that you will always get your images, no matter where they reside. Every software package has its own unique processing engine and any adjustments to an image made with that engine will almost never translate to another software package. Adobe tried to make a migration tool for Aperture users but all it did was create TIFs and copy over some meta data. The adjustments themselves were lost. I think Capture One did a lot better by taking in some basic adjustments like cropping, contrast, etc although complex adjustments like brushes and curves were lost.
Let that be a data point.
Off topic but interesting to consider : what if there was an open standard for library/catalog management that spelled out how certain adjustments should be stored? Imagine an open standard starting off to describe basic adjustments like contrast, exposure, saturation, rotation, etc. Then move on to brushes and layers. What the program does with the brushed data is its own secret sauce ... but simply marking it as a brushed area so it can be recognized by other packages would be awesome! 😊0 -

I think what you have described there is totally in line with Adobe's policy for market domination if they can achieve it.
Which of course they can if only everyone would buy their products and no others.
Bear in mind that they have tried to extend the concept with DNG (several versions) and they also have responsibility for the TIFF standard.
It's quite a puzzle to understand why anyone should look anywhere else.
But of course we do.
In my experience most singular data exchange standards are not too bad but go stale over time and some die.
Multiple standards for more complex needs all combined into some sort of "standard" interface are always in a state of change as technology advances. As that happens standards have to change. The problem becomes more challenging to address than practical usage will justify.
In photography terms you could start out with the camera manufacturers and get them to introduce a common standard - actually they have, mostly. JPEG. Just stick with that and burn the changes into a new file (or even the original) and you are all set.
I think it's actually quite difficult to justify attempting to carry over edits form a previous version of the same software if the new engine does things in a significantly different way. So for standards to be successful software would either have to stop introducing any major changes to the way things are processed OR build in full historic redundancy for all previous "standards" - which of course may not be possible.
Then of course comes the question - what sort of creative commercial business would want to be totally constrained by working with standards that really did not suit their purpose or allow them the freedom do develop things the way they wanted to develop them? And why would they bother to even try if the best they were allowed was to make stuff that everyone else was making for customers who could readily chop and change vendor easily (if the system was ever made to work ...)

Yes, you can always access your originals that are stored inside the catalog folder. How? File menu > Export > Originals. Optionally, with this command you can also export the adjustments that are stored in the catalog database.0
