I am new to Capture One also, so this advice might not be something you should just run with, but, I found several catalogs in different locations once I had played around a bit with it. It was a bit confusing at first and I was hesitant to just delete them.

From what I could figure out, a Catalog folder is independent from the actual Capture One program. Deleting an entire Catalog folder didn't change anything in my Capture One software install that I noticed, although I did not have any custom settings at the time, see below*. If a Catalog doesn't show up when you start Capture One, you can just go find it and click on it and it will load into the program.

When I was ready to start using it seriously, I deleted all the catalogs and sessions I could find that I had used for testing, then created a new catalog in its own sub folder in a root folder I called "Capture One Catalogs". Whenever I create a new Catalog, I save it in that folder in its own sub-folder. I also put all the C1 generated backups in their own folders / sub-folders. That way I know exactly where all my Capture One stuff is.

The reason I put the Catalogs in a totally different place than the image files I found that when I was using a Windows file search in a root directory that contained both image files and a Capture One catalog, I was getting unwanted file discoveries that matched the actual image file names I was searching for, because the Capture One previews use the same names as the image file names. I realized that if I kept images and catalogs in the same root folder I would have a huge mess later when trying to find a particular image file for whatever reason.

*What I haven't learned yet is where the Capture One custom settings / preferences are stored and how to back those up, but it is on my to do list. I don't know if deleting a catalog will also delete custom settings in Capture One since I had not worked with them in my initial testing, so if you have a bunch of custom settings, research how to save those.

Thank you for your reply. I have now found the Catalog by clicking on File within the software and then clicking on 'check files'. I have checked the linked location on my computer to make sure it was there and it is. Doing this in C1 showed the link to the Catalog, with folder structure fully intact. I have a copy of this folder in My Images Root Folder which can now be deleted. I also keep my various sub-folders for Tiff, Jpeg, and original Raw files etc. I back-up my important folders via Synctoy to an external drive. As I am an amateur photographer, with a very small work load, I don't really want to use tthe C1 Catalog system, as I really have no need for it. My idea is to import my raw files from the SD card, and naming my RAW folder as the place to store them. I understand that doing this within C1 will create a link between the folder and the application. My other files I will export in whatever format I need for the job at hand. Is this work method possible - will it work - and can I bypass using the catalog altogether, or must I use it?

    Oh, no. I am wrong.
With C1 Express, I believe you do have to use catalog only now.
No sessions available in that version.

    > What I had up before editing the comment:

No, you don't have to use catalogs.
    You can use sessions.
When you first open C1, you are in a session...
(C1 has to work with either a session or catalog)

    I use sessions.
This is a link to a thread about sessions and stuff

I wrote some at the bottom about the difference between sessions and catalogs.
    It might help. some..

Thank you Tan68! I am really only looking for a raw converter for Fuji X-Trans files and have no interest in file management system. Hopefully, when I import my raw files from the SD Card they will drop into the allotted folder I have pointed to and not into the Catalog. My work flow isn't big enough to warrant such management as all my selected images go into one of Blurb's books and are thus finished with. I can see the Catalog being useful for a pro photographer though.

What I wrote was confusing.. I had first said I thought you could use sessions. Then, I edited the comment to say sessions are not available in C1 Express. This is based on comments I have read in the forum. I left my initial comment because it is the convention at some bbs to not delete/change the content of a post so drastically; they prefer to add to the comment for correction. I think I was just confusing, though. Sorry.

For images to drop into whatever folder you like but not be pulled into the catalog, you want 'referenced' catalog.
