12.1 switching grid off?

Can anyone enlighten me on how I completely switch off the compositional grid in 12.1.
I have it set to not show in the "new" tool, and to not show grids in the menu, but as soon as I adjust the crop, the grid appears.

I don't want it to show at all, and I am obviously missing how this is done.

  In the Crop tool window, you'll see a check box that controls the grid while cropping.

  I hadn't realised that control existed and assumed everything was controlled from the grid tool.
