Feature difference between sessions and catalogs?
Hello,
I have been using C1P for a bit more than a year now. Coming from Aperture and then Lightroom.
Even though catalogs is maturing, it is still not quite there yet, and reading a lot of the threads in this forum, A LOT of users are using sessions instead of catalogs.
Having only used a catalog kind way in Aperture and Lightroom i was curious to see if it really was that much better to work with. So i tried it out and could see some of the flexible benefits, but also a lot more of organizing work and limited options compared to catalogs. But i do have a few questions about some basic features, not present in sessions. Maybe this will enlighten me 😉 I have seen the official Phase One videos, but they did not seem to answer my questions.
PROJETCS/SUB-ALBUMS
I usually have a project folder which organises the albums underneath in themes. I.e. Music, Nature, Family etc.
Not present in sessions. Do session users not use sub-folders etc.? And if not, why not? It seems to me, like a very good way to organise the images?
IMAGES COUNTER
In catalogs i get an image counter to the right, letting me know how many images are in the albums.
Not present in sessions?
MISSING IMAGES
Sometimes when referenced image are missing i get the question mark icon instead. In sessions when trying to delete that missing image, i keep on getting the "file is missing" error, and cannot delete the question mark image....
How do you delete a missing file?
IMPORT TO SELECTED ALBUM
In catalogs you can import and add the imported images automatically to the selected album. But not in sessions?
Is the key reason to use sessions instead of catalogs the way they are organised?
Instead of storing all images in one big database, you then store each project in each own session file?
But how do you then keep track of them all, or search between all the session files etc.?
I hope you can answer my newbie-session questions....
Kind regards...Jan
