Where do the orange dots come from?

Hi,
I'm busy masking an image and all of a sudden a orange dot appears on my image. Why do they appear and how do I get rid of them?

  orange dots are so you can select layers and move the masks

  You don't have to see them. (I don't like to.) On the Layer menu, you can toggle on and off Layer Selection Points.

  I didn't know you could turn them off, I've been so annoyed by them for the longest time 😂
