Media Pro - finally released
First off: Good news, indeed.
I happened to stumble upon this news item as an add in a photography blog(!).
How about PhaseOne informing the current customer base.
How about more detailed information as someone has mentioned already?
A change log would be very useful.
Can Media Pro be run alongside EM2?
Yes, but with separate catalogs, therefore no.
Did the catalog format remain the same or do we need to convert current EM2 catalogs?
The catalog format changed, conversion of existing Catalogs is necessary.
What's new, apart from a catalog size larger than 2GB (how big) ? More than 128000 images, that's great too (how many)?
I'd assume a reasonable answer would be in defining the factors that are limiting the catalog size.
Hardware aka RAM is another limiting factor. PhaseOne please provide a table of size-examples.
The number of Custom Fields is still limited to only 16 fields - please add more such fields.
In my opinion the new appearance of the GUI is of no use - in contrary. Long ago we learned that light letters on a black background are of no advantage to the eyes. Also long ago the option to change colors in the GUI was introduced, only to be dropped for the sake of mimicking a trend. Worse, titles in the info- and organize-panels sit on black and grey bars (to the designer: what have been smoking?) - jak.
At the very bottom left an empty field nervously keeps blinking - what's that for?
The Options in 'Preferences' are still not consolidated in tabs.
A brief & quick check on XMP:
Changing a label is still not properly reflected in other DAM apps and vice versa.
(Yes I did all the synch, export, import and rebuild.)
The HTML-engine seems to be unchanged. A new-line (CR-LF) in the description field turns into <br> the old HTM 4 tag.
(iView:PreloadNext) still creates a tag attribute border="0".
etc., etc.
Make that HTML engine comply and validate with XHTML1.0.
After all iVMP, EM2 and now MP claim to be XML aware or capable.
Are the users (once more) expected to just go ahead to 'try and see' what functionalities the new Media Pro is providing?
PhaseOne please be specific on all topics and do NOT acquire a behavior similar to the previous owners.
Myself and many have had enough of that.
But then many have few options and iVMP, EM2 and now MP so far remains the best DAM with an emphasis on M (for Management). There is no DAM application allowing to search and sort on most of the EXIF- and IPTC fields (in this aspect the forerunner Lightroom lags far behind).
30 Days trial is enough to see what we get for the new MP license. For Capture One users this might be a steal. And for the rest?
PhaseOne should consider that there is a great number of current EM2 users that do not want to purchase and use Capture One alongside with Media Pro. All they want is a decent DAM and Media Pro is pretty darn close to be a very effective and most useful DAM.

You can find the answer to some of your questions by watching the Phase One Media Pro Videos and reading our Phase One Media Pro Editorial.

Specifically the last video on the videos page is specifically about what's been upgraded since Expression Media.0 -
Well said. Very odd company, and it's turned into a heavy push to buy Capture One.
I don't need or want Capture One, especially for the price, especially with the release of this product. I was at least expecting a user's manual or something new that would address the new bugs with the new software.
Can we start a Know Issues suggestion/reporting thread?
Or how about a Whole New forum for the new product?0
