I just tested an ancient version of iView MediaPro 2.6.4 on the same computer and it was able to import the same problem Tifs without any problems.... something broke on the way up?

Bridge also doesn't have any problems viewing the thumbs or previews.

All of these Tifs are CMYK, LZW compression and it is random sets of these over a couple years that are effected.

Also seems to have problems with some PSD files too.

what could be the cause of MP not being able to scan a file that Bridge can?

There are some major problems with the 1.1 release. Then came the 1.1.1 bug fix very quickly and I was 100% sure it had to do with this problem but I was wrong. Media Pro 1.1.1 is still DOA. We have fallen back to Expression Media.

If I move the same DVD to another Mac and use iView Media or Expression Media it reads all images no problems reported. My colleague have the same issue in his Mac with MediaPro 1.1.1.

So this is a program to scan media files with. It doesn't scan our media files so what is it? Piece of crap unfortunately.

I agree that this software is very unstable and has gone backwards in terms of reliability. I have the same problem with being unable to import files. I several DVDs full of files and was importing them quite happily. Then while importing from one DVD MP reported being unable to scan about half the files. This seemed quite random. I closed everything down and re-booted, created a new DVD of the same files, but had the same problem. I tried with Expression Media 2 and it had no problems.

I am really not sure where to go with this product now. Expression Media 2 seemed stable and faster, but do I want to continue with something that is no longer supported? I keep hitting problems with Media Pro, so that also does not seem a good choice. I am not sure what's left out there that supports indexing of off-line files.

    >I am not sure what's left out there that supports indexing of off-line files.

I gave up after the unable to scan issues, searched and found, cdfinder. There's a demo online but it didn't take long before I went for it. I was really hoping that MP had gotten over the problems.

Don't be worried about the name "cdfinder", I hear that may change soon along with other changes as it moves to a new version. The application is very solid. It may not as slick as MP, but then again it doesn't crash and it didn't have any problems with scanning those files. I need something that would index all types of files, pdfs, AI, raw, etc.

Having the same issues, tried to get a refund shortly after 1.1 released because 90% of my files would not render. It did not matter if I used WIC or Capture One in preferences for rendering. Was refused a refund and assured that the new release would fix things. It's better but the program is still a peice of junk and totally useless to me. At least my raw files show up but a lot of tiff's and psd's still don't. Been waiting months now to get my collection organized, spent good money and a lot of time learning the program and am no further ahead.

I just thought I'd add my agreement to most of the comments on this topic. I moved from Expression Media 2 thinking that it would be safer to be with a currently supported product. The issue with 'unable to scan file' started with me recently. Out of a nbatch of 1,000 + DNG files it randomly picked on a few that it could not deal with. All other applications on my system work fine, including Expression. After a series of messages with support I have got no further than that I may not have the correct codec installed. I just cannot afford the time and effort to continue debugging this software. I am going back to Expression Media 2 until I can find something better. Someone above said it - off-line file support is the issues, otherwise I'd jump straight to Lightroom.

I am having almost identical problems with MP being unable to scan large numbers of TIFFS. although it can handle them one at a time. I might add that EM does not perform much better for me. It would appear that Phase One was not prepared to develop a proper file management program when they bought Expression Media from Microsoft. They bit off more than they can chew.

The only way that I can see to make either EM or MP usable is to import raw files directly from camera or card and then have the program open as one processes images to TIFFS with Auto-updater turned on and updating every minute. That way, it will be able to scan and generate a thumbnail as soon as a file is created. One TIFF at a time seems to be within the capabilities of these programs. And what makes it really weird is that thumbnails for every one of these images already exist in Capture One. I guess that the programs are not well integrated at this point.

My only solace is in knowing that I am not alone. But what to do until Phase One fixes the mess? Lightroom or Aperture just for cataloging? I have opened a formal support case to Phase One, but I do not expect a solution. Maybe they will surprise me.

I have finally given up with this product.

After many exchanges with support I was told that Phase One cannot guarantee to support DNG files. In that case the product is virtually useless. I'd really like a refund, but it's probably not worth the effort. Since Bridge and Expression Media can quite happily read all the files that Phase One cannot I am now returning to those two products. Expression Media 2 is still stable, supports off-line files and the standalone reader works better that the Phase One version for occasions when I have to send out files for review. I'll now re-import all my off-line folders back into Expression. I'll also check out the latest version of Lightroom to see if it does an adequate job of supporting off-line files (especially those stored on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Phase one lost a lifetome customer. I used to think Capture One did a far better job than Adobe camera Raw. However, since Media Pro stinks so bad I started using LightRoom and found the quality of images from ACR is as good as P1. Adobe products work like they are supposed to. Plus with all the plugins and ease of custom camera profiles in LR it's the clear winner.

So long Phase One after 12 years. Maybe if they would have given me a refund for MP I would still be using C1.

One more thing. I used to have a lot of respect for Peter Krough on file managing. However since he became the "Ronald McDonald" of Phase One I've lost it. If all you ever do is use C1 and MP and never make PSD's or TIFF's it works fine. However that's fantasy land, how many people work that way? Pay to go to one of his seminars on integrateing the two programs, what a joke. He has caused a lot of headaches for a lot of people by endorsing something he has to know doesn't work in the real world.

I have actually found the source of the problem with reading PSD files from DVD discs. I've been in contact with the support team and you all know how that went. Maybe they need to make some fine changes to the GUI before making the program do what it is supposed to do? ๐Ÿ™„

    Let me refrase that.

    The program is not working.
I have a possible solution and I have told them about it.
    PhaseOne is doing nothing.

I reported in november 2011 about a major problem scanning PSD files from DVDs. I went through the "normal" procedure of testing and comparing to ExpressionMedia and even iVewMediaPro. The problem only exists in MediaPro. Then came MediaPro 1.2 and I thought this is it! It was not.

I have also found with big astonishment that the ugly bug that Microsoft introduced with a lot of scanning sessions simultaneously is still here! Why? I reported 3 years ago at the Microsoft forum that this is completely nuts and they even agreed. It will choke the DVD reading process and making it come to a standstill almost.

As I was testing the PSD files I noticed that MediaPro at one point had 17 processes going on the DVD. Yes that is 17 as in "seven f-ing teen!"

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/231879/mediapro/processes.jpg

But when I manually rebuilt the PSD files one at a time there was no problem. I could finish the DVD scan if I rebuilt them manually one at a time. To me this show that it is the clumsy behavior when reading DVDs that is the problem to fix. The program itself can read the files.

When showing this to the support they backed away and said this was "very complex adjustment requiring significant structure change to the program".

I think they mean that there are problems for MediaPro to decide what type of disc it is scanning. It thinks it's a hard drive every time. I can agree that there could be some hard coding required to make that work in all cases. But then again iViewMedia Pro did not do it this way so...

    Well... I suggested another solution.

Why not let the user decide if it is a DVD we are scanning from?
Under that command MediaPro could surely be instructed to only start one session, right?

    http://dl.dropbox.com/u/231879/mediapro/scanning.jpg

    History recap
iViewMedia Pro : could read all files and fast รขโ‚ฌโ€œ no multi session scanning on DVDs
MS Expression Media : could read all files but SLOW (multi session scanning chokes the DVD)
PS MediaPro : can NOT read all files and is SLOW (multi session scanning chokes the DVD)

So we are getting a worse version of this program for each generation... shouldn't this be the other way around?

Please PhaseOne put some f-ing pride into this if you want to come across as a professional photo company. Oh I forgot to say please... sorry.

I'm on v1.4.1 so don't know if this applies but I was having same problem of tif files not displaying preview and only showing generic image icon, nothing happening on rebuild despite several attempts. In preferences there is an option (under media rendering) to choose PhaseOne engine rather than apple. This fixed my problem.

Hello I am back two years later. What happened? Did they solve this? ๐Ÿ˜ฒ
    Of course they didn't mu-ha-ha-ha! ๐Ÿ˜‚

Chosing the Apple engine makes Media Pro start a lot of importer processes. Chosing the PhaseOne engine starts only two importer processes. But the problem is that two processes is still one too many when scanning a DVD full with PSD files.

My Mac sounds like it's going to die and on screen I see 50 empty icons. 5 minutes later my Mac still sound like it's going to die and I still have 50 empty icons to stare at.

When I manually drop in one PSD file at a time I have 10 files done in 3 min. And the Mac is silent as it only use one scan process on the DVD.
