C1v6: "If I can't handle it, I won't admit it's there"
All:
I've run into a thing that might have an easy fix, but I suspect that won't be a happy fix.
I used my SLR to create a Gigapan panorama that's approximately 688 MPixels (57772x10972), and have exported that to a TIF file. Photoshop CS4 and CS5 can read and process it as normal. The file is big, but not THAT big: 621 MBytes.
There does seem to be a maximum limit to TIF files, but that's out at 4GB from what I've read:
http://www.awaresystems.be/imaging/tiff/faq.html#q8
I couldn't find anything in the forums about a limitation, but apologize if I missed it somewhere.
How might I get Capture One (current version) to see the file? Right now, it doesn't even believe that such a file exists. I navigate to that folder, and although Windows Explorer sees it there, can preview it, and see and set its metadata, and photoshops can use it just file, C1v6 simply does not believe that file is present in that directory. Weird.
I checked on the gigapan site and their forums, and no mention of TIF output file incompatibilities, and mine is definitely not a large panorama by their standards.
I needed a "thumbnail" that I reduced to 2k pixels in the vertical, resulting in 5392x1024, and 15.8mb, which are images I routinely work with. CaptureOne had no problems with that image. So maybe there is a maximum size I'm up against?
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Thom Randolph

As you suggest, it is probably the file size (amount of pixels) of your panorama that CO6 is not displaying or detecting the TIF file. I have not looked into this recently, but I recall a file limit. 0 -
I am running into similar problems as I start to produce some large panoramics.
A current one is 31kpx x 8.7kpx, or 273 Mpx in size. CO 6.4.3 doesn't recognize that it exists, either tiff or jpeg.
I can get a 141Mpx to be seen and processed.
LR 4 imports both; as does Media Pro.
I cannot find any info online about the file limits.
Does anyone have any recent experience?
I may have to do some trial and error creation.

I have seen things like this in several systems over the years. If I remember correctly Lightroom when released at V1 had an inbuilt width constraint. Obviously this was addressed for later versions.
There are all sorts of reasons for why doing this may be easy of difficult depending on how the applications underlying database and data handling are managed and very likely the core tools in use. I would guess that someone somewhere has written a definitive paper describing the issues and we just need to find it on the internet.
Some systems would announce files they could not read as be 'damaged or otherwise corrupt'. I'm not sure whether that is better than just not seeing it at all.
Others would appear to recognise and attempt to open but then crash without warning. I would definitely not support that approach to development.

I kick this topic because the problem still exists in current version;
C1 6.4.4
I find it disappointing, not only because I waisted time to find out that the 648Mb file is in mint condition, the limit also conflicts with Capture Ones imago; A professional raw image development software that minimizes workflow.
I tested the size problem with the 8555x5667 tif file;
Same dimension 418 Mb (cleaned up unused layers) no show
Flattened file 134 Mb no show
Deleted the C1 cache in the pano folder : no show
Resized the photo to 6000x3975 75Mb flat tif file: No show
Resized to 5600x3710 62 Mb flat tif file; No show
Now here is the strange part; Photos of a 21 Mb camera do show
5617 x 3744 60Mb tif and larger
To test the folder listing update:
Copied the pano file in smaller size and large size to a new location never used with C1 and still: No show...
Saved the 5600x3710 again as tiff this time without Alpha layer disabled in PS and and Adobe rgb color profile disabled.
Now it shows!
It is a mystery to me why photos with tons of layers do show and this file not.
But so far my findings are:
There is a problem with file size
There is a problem with aplha layers in flat tif files.
I'm done working for free to contribute to C1 and will use another software finish what I actually had to do today.0
