v7 express catalog to v8 pro sessions

When using a catalog, the adjustments are stored in the catalog database, not in the sidecar files in the subfolder of the images folder, as with sessions.

First, backup your entire catalog folder. Next, I suggest you to install CO8 and run trial as Pro. Verify the catalog from CO7 (File menu). Open your catalog from CO Express 7. Most probably it will open without problems because CO8 is much more capable of handling larger catalogs.

Now, you can export your images with adjustments (File > Export > Originals) or maybe you like to continue with the catalog in CO8.

    Thank you for the info.

I understand the difference between where adjustments are stored, I prefer to have them local to image files.
My main few issues with catalog (assuming stable and not crashing, which it isn't right now in v7 exp) is that I can't easily control which directories are included & excluded and any changes to directory structure need to be manually corrected in CO.

My file structure was not set up for cataloging so I need control over which sub folders should be able to be be treated as a whole and also to be able to excluding many sub folders. My file structure actually comes from what worked best with earlier CO versions.

Ideally I'd like a way to back out of my current catalog without losing any settings and then I could restructure my image directories, then start with a fresh build of the catalog from that.

I know I can currently manually search for missing renamed folders and also manually delete folders I don't want in catalog, but I have far to many to address. I also want to be sure all associated CO files for images in directories removed from catalog are deleted.

Ultimately I need a way to keep my file structure as it is and as I understand the only way is to move from express to pro where the long standing method of sessions still works. I wanted to be sure there was a good way to migrate from catalog to session.

I am very happy PO has a special on upgrading express to v8 pro and i want to take advantage of that for this reason alone, but will need to make sure it works on my system first.

How do I just export the adjustments to bring them back to the same directory as the original images just as it was in version 6? I do not need to export the images, they exist already on the image drive.

Can I get help with this? I just want to 'export' or move the settings files to be in a sub directory of the image folder (just like they were in CO express versions 4-6) I do not need to move or recreate the image files ( in this case Sony .ARW)

Sorry but at this time you cannot separate the two.
Export Originals will give you a copy of the RAW (which you can then delete) as well as the Adjustment files.

This is very disappointing as it means I need to exports originals to a temp dummy folder, then erase the copy of the RAW then move the adjustments folder back to the folder that has the original RAW images. With several hundred directories this will be a tedious and time consuming process.

Indeed it's not ideal, however it is currently all we can offer.

Is this option for transferring setting files only in the feature roadmap?

The switch to CO7exp with catalogs only got me in this mess, upgrading to CO8pro only to get out of it, now I learn that backing out is not as easy as originally thought.

I am sorry but we do not discuss future development on the User to User forum.
But it certainly would be a nice feature to have 😉
