Disabling catalog, use folders only
I'm currently trying out Capture One 7 and haven't been able to locate any information on how to avoid the catalog and import features.
I want my originals to stay in one place, in only one version, without getting copied ("imported") somewhere else. That is, I basically want a simple view showing the files that are stored somewhere on the hard drive so I can make whatever adjustments I want and then export images, without making intermediate, identical copies of the images.
How do I do that in Capture One? (Other photo editing software can do that. Please don't tell me this isn't possible with Capture One!)

You should work in the mode called "sessions".
Create a new session, and you will be able to work the way you want.
You can also work in a catalog mode that leaves the photos where they are. I use sessions.1 -
Thanks! That explains why I couldn't figure it out. I was using the "Express" version instead of the "Pro" version.
Is the "sessions" folder view feature--or rather avoiding the catalog feature--really not available in Express? I'm certainly not going to shell out €229 instead of €69 for a simple folder view!0 -
When Importing images to the catalog select "Current Location" as the destination. The images then get added to the catalog, but remain where they are. I use both C1 7 (with Catalog) and Lightroom. My image files all reside in a single folder structure that is accessed by both catalogs. 0 -
Thanks. I actually tried to select that option, but the "free space" counter indicated that I'd be moving to a different folder (on a different drive) nonetheless. This may be a minor, cosmetic bug, though, so if the original file stays in one place that way, I can certainly live with that. 0 -
On my system the free space reading matches that of the drive containing the C1 catalog. I'm guessing that allows me to know if I have enough space to actually move the images into the catalog should I choose to do so. 0 -
On CO713/Mac the Space Left field is cleared when I choose to import with Current Location. I assume this should be the same on Windows. It applies to Inside Catalog only.
I suggest to neglect it in this situation.0 -

A reasonable assumption. But no, it does not clear on my Windows 7 PC regardless of my import choices. Not an issue - in fact I had not noticed that field until reading this thread.0 -

That is what I meant but I did not made it clear. It should be cleared on Windows too. An alignment issue.0 -

Of course you do get quite a bit more than that for the money - if you can make use of it.
