    Is this normal? Very annoying...

Normal, no. It sounds like your mac is pretty warm just by idling. It might be a good idea for you to carefully blow it through with compressed air.
Please do a proper search on how to do this before actually doing it.

Yes it gets warm when I start CO... So compressed air might be a really bad idea.

My theory here is that you have semi-blocking dust in the fan system. This means that it cannot get rid of the heat fast enough, and then turn up the fans, to get more air through.

Compressed will loosen the dust, and and blow it out of the system.

That said, CO will use some system resources when you are adjusting. When you are adjusting eg. white balance, there are a lot of complex operations going on, and this will of course require some computing power.

I have had similar, but not identical issues on a last model 17" MBPro. It is running SSDs, spends most of its time on a stand that allows air to pass under it, etc so I'm not clear on where all the heat is coming from. While the fan might be annoying, I am not really having any software or hardware performance issues.

The only thing Frank that I can think of that might be making it hot is that I am running an external display. Are you also running an external display?

What OS are you running. Last update to 10.8.3 fixed a fan problem.

I would love to go to 10.8.3 at work, but at this point even 10.8 is likely months away. I don't really take issue with the fan, I was just trying to help Frank out. Frank, if you find that an OS update works could you let me know?

I'm running 10.8.3 and my fan is running like crazy whenever I start up C1 7.1.1. Doesn't happen when I start C1 6.4.3

As we have higher demands for the machine with CO 7 due to more complex (higher quality output) routines, it is natural that your CO6 machine will run a little hotter in comparison.
It is only natural that CO7 takes advantage of newer technologies to enhance image quality. Taking advantage of the computer capabilities saturates the machine to a higher degrees, thus increasing the amount of heat be emitted from the electronics.

What I recommended in a previous post in this thread might also be helpful for you.

There is a recent firmware update for some MBP that came out very recently. It might be worth running to see if that helps as well.

Yes I'm running an external monitor and a SSD. But this can't be the reason, no?

I think the dust isn't the problem, the computer operates normal in other apps. And people here report the same issue.

And the crazy fan noise is truly annoying only while browsing through images, still not getting better.

That depends. You have to remember that you are using a portable with a video card that is integrated onto the main board. This is a recipe for higher heat when you are using an external display and putting a heavy load onto the video card by rendering previews. Are you running with the attached display open or closed? I have had some people tell me that they experience better cooling just running the laptop with the built in monitor open. The SSD on the other hand should help, not only through greater computing power, but because SSDs run cooler than HDs.

Do you run any other particularly taxing applications on the same laptop? If the fan doesn't run like crazy while you are surfing the internet I would wonder if it would while running Final Cut, Premiere, Pro Tools, etc.

My fan only kicks into high gear when I am generating previews on a big folder, quickly browsing through a folder, and other tasks that create a load on the machine. Unless you think there might be something wrong with temperature monitoring on your laptop itself, it is probably a good thing that you fan kicks on and cools off the insides.

If it is truly, that annoying, you could try a cooling stand, something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a ... Mgodv04AEw

I realize this is yet another fan that might cause additional noise, but I will leave it to you to decide if it is worth trying or not.
