Capture One starts and always keeps opening the same catalog
Since I upgraded to Capture One 20 I am having a problem when starting up CO. So far using versions 12 and 11, Capture One started and displayed a "Recents" window showing the catalogs I opened so far. Next step for me was was to choose the database to be opened.
Now Capture One starts and keeps opening the same catalog, no matter what other catalog I have opened the last time. Funny thing is, that I use Capture One on two machines, a MacPro and a MacBook Pro, when I am out and about.
The MacPro shows this problem, but the MacBook Pro does not. I use the same databases on both machines, both machines run macOS 10.13.6. I now use Capture One 13.1.1.24.
Any ideas how to fix this problem? I would like to see the "Recents" window and them pick the database I want to work with.
Thanks.

I reported this problem as well. It is under investigation.
In the meantime you can hold the alt key when starting the application. This will give you the recent window.

Hi Andre:
Thank you very much. By the way, all of a sudden my MacBook Pro now began to do the same thing like my MacPro. I have no clue why...
Best regards,

Hi there:
Just a brief update. This week (August 20,2020) I downloaded and installed the latest update of CO 20, version 13.1.2.37. The bug is still there! Any plans to fix the problem anytime soon?
Best regards,

Hi again:
I recently upgraded to CO Pro 21 and ... lo and behold ... the problem is still there! I can't believe that there is no solution to the problem. Maybe some obscure ini-file? How can this be fixed?

Yes, indeed it is still there. The ticket that I opened is still open wince six months now. I have asked for an update today.
It seems to me that some "cosmetical" errors are simply placed at the bottom of stack of all the bugs and errors.

And hi again:
I now use Capture One Pro 21 version 14.1.1.63, still on the same hardware (see above) and still the same thing happening! Will you ever fix this?

For me, using Windows, C1 has always started by opening the last used Session or sessions - whatever I had open when I last closed it. The same applies to catalogs on those rare occasions when I use them.
I think most people would be annoyed if C1 did not work that way. Especially if they use the same catalog 99.9 days out of every 100.
There are 2 exceptions that I can think of.
If the system crashes without closing correctly the "recents" list will be displayed, thus avoiding the perpetual opening of a possibly corrupted catalogue or session.
If I install a new release it is usually alongside previous releases and therefore the user settings file is very likely to be a new file with no "last used" information. SO C1 will no know what was last used and will offer the (operating system's) "Recents" list if there is one to offer.
Maybe Macs do something different but from my perspective what you describe as a problem sounds like normal operation as desired by most users - or so it seems.

Frank's issue isn't that it is opening the last session/catalog, it is that it is always opening the same session/catalog even when it is not the last one visited.
Since this doesn't happen to everyone I suspect something with Frank's specific operating environment. If this were happening to me I'd do the following in hopes that it would change things. I get rid preferences, including those that might be around from previous versions of the app. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. The steps go something like this for users of Capture One 21.
- open capture one.
- Window -> Workspace -> Save workspace so you don't lose your current setup
- quit capture one
- launch a terminal windo
- Enter the following commands to get rid of all preferences:
defaults delete com.phaseone.captureone13
defaults delete com.captureone.captureone13
defaults delete com.captureone.captureone14 - quit the terminal window
- re-launch Capture One
It will look like a new install. Dismiss the splash window and use Window -> Workspace to re-load the workspace you saved in step 2. If any of the "defaults delete ..." commands fail it's probably because the named preferences don't exist. Don't worry about it, but verify that you didn't typo the name.
Doing that has resolved several user interface issues for me. Maybe it will help Frank. Or maybe it will be a waste of time.

Hi Marco:
Thank you very much for your quick response.
I did all you mentionend, from 1 to 7, then re-loaded my saved workspace. The only change I see now, is that the default catalog is loading (created by the initial setup process) instead of the one that kept loading all the time. Sorry, that did not work.

Hi Marco:
I just did another thing after step no. 7. I deleted the initially created new catalog. Now Capture One starts up without loading a catalog. :-) I hope that things will stay that way.

Hi Marco,
Thanks for this tip. This solved this annoying bug. I always had to hold down the alt key while I opened the program so it would show the list with sessions that I worked on. Now this not needed anymore. Indeed I had to also delete the new catalog but after that it worked fine. ( I only work with sessions)
Even though I opened up an official call a year ago at capture one without luck it seems to be solved now.
Thanks for sharing.

Frank and Andre, I'm happy to hear that my tip helped. This time. It's not a cure-all. Whatever caused the problem to occur in the first place can always happen again. As I mentioned, sometimes clearing everything does nothing more than waste some time.

Frank and Andre,
Out of interest, how do you normally start C1 on your systems?
Via a desktop icon?

Always via the dock-icon.

Same here. Dock icon
Running on latest Mac OS.Regards Andre

Hi Marco:
I am sorry to let you know, that my Capture One Pro starts opening the same catalog again. :-(
That workaround barely worked for one week...

Hi Marco
Indeed, yesterday I experience the same problem. However I think I know where the bug is.
After you suggestion all worked fine. I click on the app icon and then it shows the splash screen and then the list of recently opened items (sessions or catalogs). So exactly as I want it and it did in the beginning way back. Then I open a session and do my work inside it. Normally when I close the session I always close via CMD-W which closes the sessions and shows the recent list again so I can start working on another session (project). If I want to stop I just press CMD-Q to close the program while it shows the recent list. So this worked fine for some days indeed.
Yesterday however when I opened a session and did my work inside that session I pressed CMD+Q which closes the session as well as Capture one.
After this it does NOT show the recent list anymore and opens a session straight away. So now I'm back at holding the ALT key while I click on the capture-one icon to first see this list of recently opened sessions.
Don't know why they can't fix this in a decent way or via some settings in the preferences.Andre

Andre, what you describe is the way many (most?) of us like it. When I quit Capture One the next time I open it my preference is for it to be in the exact state it was when I quit. Your stated preference is the opposite of mine. The people at Capture One would have to add a new preference item to please both of us.
Until that day you'll have to either remember to close the window before quitting Capture One or always launching with the Opt key depressed.
