capture one express (fuji) catalog

    Hi Clive and welcome,

A referenced catalog would normally be relatively small since you can leave the source files on other drives.

The default as recommended is to have the catalogue(s) on the system drive for best performance however although I mainly use sessions (a Pro version feature not available in Express) I also have a second SSD drive installed and most often work from that and even at SATA2 connection speeds (I used a handy comms port that is not full SATA3) performance is fine for my needs whether session or my occasional experiments with catalogues.

I have never used the Express version but I would assume you can tell C1 where you want to create a catalog and just specify your second drive. I also sometimes use external drives (not SSD) and a NAS but doing so does tend to introduce some performance issues as communications speeds are compromised. Usable but quite a bit slower in some situations.

It should be possible to move a Catalogue to another disk (or maybe copy first to be on the safe side). If you do that via the system bear in mind that your "recent files" link or any desktop shortcut will still be pointing to the original location.

If the referenced files are on a drive with a fixed name the references in the catalog database should still work - but again, try a copy first so that you can feel comfortable about what you are doing.

    HTH.

Thanks for the response Grant. I had a look at the catalog. It's the previews that are taking up space - they already almost 4GB..and now I've only got 10GB left on my system drive. I'd like to move the catalog to a 2nd, larger SSD. Don't really want to reconfigure it as my system drive.

I do not recall seeing an option to specify the location when I created the catalog. I tried manually moving the catalog then starting C1 by opening the catalog. It would not open the catalog and came up with a message stating "multiple catalogs are only supported by C1 pro" and "you can change the default catalog by holding down the alt key when starting up C1". I tried holding down the alt key, but saw no way of changing the catalog in the preferences.

My guess is that you cannot move or run a catalog in a different location with C1 express. Pity. That will force my hand - seems I either need to buy C1 pro or upgrade my LR.

    Clive,

    I would suggest two things.

Firstly check your preview size in Preferences > Image .

The suggested "ideal" size is to be the same as your normal screen resolution but 4GB of previews sounds like a lot unless you have a lot of images already loaded to your catalogue. If you think you can reduce the preview size (C1 will in any case recalculate in use if it sees a need - the pre-saved previews are mostly a time saving and data shifting reduction exercise) then change the setting and regenerate the previews to see what that gives you.( That said a bigger drive would be beneficial but you know that already.)

I think there is a restriction in C1 Express that only ever allows one catalogue to be opened at a time. So I would expect that to open a catalogue from a different location you would need to close C1, navigate to the catalogue you want to open and click on it - just as you have already tried. However I have never used an Express version of C1 so I could be wrong.

The message you get appears to be suggesting that when C1 Express opens it always opens the previously defaulted catalogue in any case. That seems odd.

As for holding down the Alt key when starting C1 - I have never had that work using Windows 7. However it's not that big a deal for me as a Pro version user so not something I have pursued through the Support Team.

I would strongly suggest that you create a Support Case and get advice from the C1 Support Team. (This will, naturally, also provide C1 with feedback ...)

Suffice it to say that I would expect you to have all of the flexibility you desire in the Pro or Pro for Fuji versions plus a large number of additional tools and features. If you still have the option to run Pro in trial mode you could try that out in order to be satisfied that you can do what you want to do.

But in any event create that Support Case (The Help Menu has a "Contact Support" option).

    HTH.

Thanks for the reply Grant. Yes, there appears to be no way to move the Catalog with express. I tried downloading and installing the trial C1 Pro, but when run it starts express. I uninstalled express, downloaded pro and installed. When I launched it, the C1 pro startup box showed, but then it switched over to express. I think I will have to create a support case.

    Cheers,
    Clive

No need to file a support case. All you need to do is change the run-mode in the Licence... menu item. The app itself is actually the same for all « versions ».
