Can you import without waiting for previews to load?

I have a folder with several thousand photos but I only want to import 1000 of them. I also want to be sure that duplicates are filtered out. I've moved the 1000 photos in to a different folder to streamline this process but I still have to wait for all of them to load the previews in the import dialog. This is really time consuming. Is there a way to import the photos without waiting for the previews to render?

    In the Import Images window, it's not rendering previews- it's loading the available thumbnails, which is the lowest renderable image from a file. Short of getting the files into a faster location, no, there's not really a good way.
    However, in my experience, if you open the Import Images dialog and point to the Source folder, the thumbnails will start populating. Closing that window will let the thumbnails continue to populate into a cache. When loading that Import Images again, they'll be loaded much faster.
    Of course, this is anecdotal and your mileage may vary.
