Recovering from mass deletion
Well... I did it. I deleted ALL the photos in a folder. I mark 1 star as 'to be deleted' and 4 to keep, but 5 to keep AND process to JPG. It was late and I had just deleted some 1-stars from another folder and all went swimmingly (as they say on PBS Masterpiece 😉.
I suspect I picked the 1-star and greater (the canned select) instead of the custom select, that I had just done in the last folder (2 or less stars). It is easy to get confused when you are tired.
So I used Recuva (I am going to buy the Pro version just as a thank you) to retrieve most, if not all the files, BUT now I want to recover my edits.
My understanding is the edits are in the catalog. So I think I need to go to my last catalog backup and then it will automatically find the files (they are back in the original location now). Then, I guess I need to find a way to 'export' the edits so they can be 'reimported' into my current catalog.
Am I on the right track?
Can I safely open a backup catalog, somehow just export the edits of that one folder and then somehow import them into the new catalog (after closing C1 and reopening the 'current' catalog)? (Lot of somehows in there, I know).
I am afraid I am going to make a misstep and lose some edits in the current catalog. We are talking about over 1000 edits and 'ratings' associated with the restored photos that I am trying to retrieve.
I am a former LR users and not yet feeling right at home with the C1 environment.
Any guidance? An article you can point me to?

Hmm... Ok. I have found that in C1 v9 I can export images with EIP checked and then when I 'import' from that export folder the images appear in the importer window. So from what I can tell, C1 v9 added the ability with EIP to import into catalogs, not just sessions as in the past.
So I think the only thing I need to know is the proper way to have C1 use a backup catalog. Do I just double-click on the backup catalog file and it uses that one when C1 launches? My thought is to export the 4 and 5 star images using EIP and import them into the current catalog.
Does this sound like the right way to go? It sounds too easy and I am a little gun shy at this point. 🤓0 -
I always use Google Drive to back up my images so if I do delete some images by mistake I can always get them back.
It doesn't cost very much (I have 1TB) and is worth it in the long run.

Let me bump this and see if someone will comment on my suggested plan.
P.S.
I don't backup with Google because of their privacy policies. I have my own NAS and have nearly all photos backed up to it. Obviously, I need to work on a more consistent approach.
P.P.S.
I am also going to add creating full-size jpg (sRGB I guess instead of Adobe RGB) to send to the NAS as part of the creating of the smaller resolution versions for sharing with others.0 -
Richard, if you delete the images you can get them back, but not the edits, right? Are you talking about exporting as JPG to Google drive? 0 -
Well, in case anyone stumbles on this....
I did the process I described and was able to import the files, but they retain the .eip suffix when imported. It warns when they are imported that any adjustments made in the catalog after this are not automatically incorporated into the 'EIP' files (I presume it means they only have the changes embedded the changes when they were exported. I presume if I exported the EIP files as EIP files again, they would have the new adjustments embedded in them.)
The 'adjustments' show up when you select one to edit, so it seemed to work. But I am wondering now it is would be smarter to export the files as a catalog and import the catalog rather than as EIP files?0
