"Move to Trash" in Catalog
When I select "Move to Trash" the file disappears from my screen. It is put into the "Catalog Trash." When I empty the "Catalog Trash" is the file deleted from the disk or just the link from within the catalog. I have a great many unnecessary photos I and wish to clear up disk space, and I haven't been able to discern if this removes the file completely or just the link from within the catalog.

Hi,
Are you working in managed or referenced catalog ? In other words, are your pictures included in your catalog or outside, in an other volume, for instance ?0 -

They are within my catalog.0 -
OK. The link below is for version 7, but I guess the process is still valid for latter versions:

Be aware of the Remove File Reference dialog.
It's so badly worded and goes against every kind of rules in interface guidelines.
The heading is about file reference but in the middle of the description they change the action and suddenly the original file is the target. But the button description does not read that. Also a destructive action is the default button.
I've reported this as a bug as the localised version of this is even worse then the English one.
They have acknowledge the situation.
So be aware that things or actions are not always what they first seems to be in CO.0
