Conclusion, few simple steps ....
Conclusion.. 6 months working with C4. (8 yrs with C3) My main issue still is control and visual aspect of workflow during and after shooting. Some very simple steps below would help to make my life and your software easier to use in day to day photography practice.
Please note : I have had the phase one training (1 to 1) and watched the DVD etc and used for day to day 6 months.
My issues :
'Apply settings to all' - as it was so simple in C3 - now there is every option to make a mistake on large jobs. I do understand how to do it - it just doesn't work for me in everyday use like it did before. I find myself applying certain functions then having to double check every thing after they are processed (which I shouldn't need to do !)
'Visual' - all white text colour on black, so hard to glance and view quickly the different tablets. Maybe need colour option just on the bars (eg overlay bar, exposure bar etc) Still not first nature as to where everything is.
Shink below 'fit size' - Need to be able to reduce the image in the window below 'fit size' (and have the colour/border around it) for many different applications like seeing the sizing of images for the web etc, Clients prefer it too. - it was in C3 so bring this useful option back !! (example problem - if I shoot a black image it is lost in the black tool bar as I can not shink the image to give it colour all round )
Menu symbols - eg. 'Q' quick menu - one too many menus, because you can make bespoke ones yourself anyway. Too much replication so you need the option to remove certain menus.
Set White balance - why can't we just have the 1 function/tablet to select WB then set/save it for the rest in the same tablet like C3. (again quicker and safer)
Image preference selection - star ratings and colour selection are terrible. Never used them and would rather take out my pen and write all the image numbers down. Make easier/faster and more professional looking. (do not want to use mouse ! - just apple* for tick apple* for untick for example ) Easy easy easy was by far the best thing - do not try to complicate.
Focus - whilst I have been using this function with no problems, I do not like huge enlarging of a product image etc when the client is over my shoulder - bring back the old option.
To end, It is going to be a good bit of software if Phase One continue to listen to their clients, sadly day-to-day use at speed is still not there at present. We are photographers first and computer nerds second !!!

Thank you Simon. Hope you will find some ears! 0 -
Nicely put and I agree with all

I couldn't agree more !

Thank you Simon ,
I could not agree more. We need speed! moving images around in the program, we need to simplify the whole 'copy and apply" changes system to something like it was and remove ANY chance of inadvertently copying stars/tags.... my clients are going nuts losing "on the job" edits.
One other thing, is there a way to have stars and tags go through to jpeg outputs? My clients ... the ones who pay for this very xpensive equipment would love to see their edits reflected in the lo-res jpeg outputs that they use to make their selects after the job
and why cant the selected image in the browser have a COLORED BORDER so we can spot EASILY
The beauty of C1 3 was on set capture made EASY and EFFICIENT
This software falls down badly in this area , it's getting better ,but i don't feel enough listening is going on
On a more positive note, the quality of files is wonderful

hello,
well also an austrian photographers team agrees with all your comments! 😉
worst thing is copy/paste-changes to other pictures. something simple as in C1 3 would be my first choice - not only because we are used to. correcting the color after final-editing 300 pictures is a horrible thing.
we would love to see some update with additional easy-to-use-changes-applier, and other enhancements as spoken above. please!!!
thanks - robert, Austria0 -
I agree completely, I still don't think Phase is understanding the problem with the focus tool. 0 -

Another one who agrees.
Although I appreciate the not so user friendly options, For me it keep grubby hands from grabbing the mouse and start clicking away.
Couple of points that are important to me.
Focus tool is great but why not bring back the separate focus window..or better yet multiple focus windows like in some of your competitors software.
Also a must is to be able to make the image smaller without having to go to the multiview mode. I do a ton of celebrity, fashion, ad , and editorial. Most of the time it's not ideal to have this huge image pop up of a not so pleasant shot and all of a sudden the shoot isn't going as well as it was a second ago. I understand most people want that image to pop up as fast a FW400 can travel(really wish there was and ethernet port as well, we need speed) and be big and beautiful for all the world to see. But not all the time man.
Tagging system is kind of lame as well. But I guess that won't change now. I liked editing in C1 3.7 now I feel like I'm working in Bridge. I too have lost an edit while applying changes. That was fun when the client said to me, " why are these all 1's now?". "Uhhhh....software?"
I do like anton's suggestionOne other thing, is there a way to have stars and tags go through to jpeg outputs? My clients ... the ones who pay for this very xpensive equipment would love to see their edits reflected in the lo-res jpeg outputs that they use to make their selects after the job
I know you can do it by going through the job again and processing into a "selects" folder
But it would be great to have everything sorted while processing instead of me staying up all night going through it again, sorting, and reliving the long hard day I just had.
One last thing. I made this mistake once when I first started using C1 4 Luckly these were test shots/plates that could be reshot and I caught it in time to reshoot. I was importing a card and frames popped up so I hit command A and hit upload all images not noticing images were still coming up in preview off screen and hit import all images. Well only 12 images came in instead all 50+ images. I believe when importing you shouldn't have to wait for all the previews to come up then still wait a bit more to make sure that's they're all in. When you hit important all it should take in ALL the images on the card. Or at least a warning saying something like "Hey buddy, are you sure you want to only import 12 of 50+ images?"
I think overall C1 4 has great potential keep working at it! It's not there yet. Maybe the magic number is 5.0 -
