So far I always disabled sharpening in the export dialogue.

To avoid artifacts from sharpening in the image before major operations.

I just wonder if this is true or just based on my Photoshop experience/prejudgement.

Do you disable sharpening before exporting to PS?

IMO, the default is nothing more than capture sharpening, which I apply to all digital images before working them. What are your sharpening settings? BTW, I do turn off the sharpening for portraits, since I have created PS Actions for all portraits.

It's just the default sharpening. I didn't change that in CO4, as it looks pretty good to me.

The image, when it lands in Photoshop, looks much less sharp.

I just wonder if the rule for Photoshop ("never do more than just minor adjustments on an already sharpened image") is also valid for sharpening applied by CO 4.

In other words: do you increase noise, or create artifacts by importing the image with the default sharpening (in my case: of 4.1.1, as I'm still on Tiger).

If there's no real quality win by applying "disable sharpening", I'd import with the basic sharpening settings and can probably win some by avoiding the more aggressive sharpening by unsharp mask.

    That's what I wonder...

Output sharpening is always the last thing you do. However, capture sharpening just replaces the sharpness lost by the sensor (I believe it has to do with the sensor's filter, but other can confirm that). I don't use Tiger, but, if the default is too much, then reduce it until you are comfortable with the results. Your images should not look crispy after capture sharpening. If they are, then you are over doing it. My default is 150, .08, 1.0. I've not notice any issues with artifacts when adjusting in PS CS4, unless I pushed things too far--which would be user error.
