You guys (at phase one) should be ashamed of yourselves for releasing a new pay-to-play version of Capture One so soon after version 4, without ever having adequately addressed the bugs and feature requests in version 4. Clearly, version 5 should have been an enhanced version of 4, and failing that at the very least it should be a free upgrade for those who recently purchased version 4. It's a cheap, reprehensible move and I'm disgusted that I have no real choice but to continue using software produced by this company; never has the choice to go with Phase backs and C1 software so clearly been a matter of the "lesser of evils".

I am a user since 3.1 or so..
On 3.xx you have had 2 free major updates. I would have wished they would have charged earlier for upgrades - so we would not have had the troubles we had the 4.x mess. But i understand you. But .. photoshop for example does charge also for any update. And to be honest.. the next photoshop version is not a complete new photoshop.

I agree with almost of your post.. we all know C1 Pro is a very good RAW converter solution and yes v5 bring many new features in regard to v4. But you're right, Phase One should have inform their customers some time before that a new version will come out. Nik Multimedia is doing that.. fine. Although the upgrade price is reasonable, I too think it's not a fair attitude from Phase One to ask for an upgrade in the case where some customers bought just some (very few) weeks ago their soft. It's not only a question of money, not only !! (In France we use to say : "we are not milk cows..").
Another curious thing is that I had, short time after purchase, reported a bug which is not solved in v4.. but in v5 ! Support relation was good but I have to pay to see my bug (cropping picture doesn't update image rendering when done) corrected ! Funny no ?
It seems to be now an habit with some companies, Filemaker does the same with Bento.., so upgrading a soft to a new version without correcting the issues of current release. Yes, we live in a curious world.
    Cheers. Michel. ☹️

In defense of PhaseOne...they DID announce the V4 version ahead of time, but when the new version took longer to develop, the excoriation for broken promises was unbelivable. Kodak preannouncement of it's last Pro camera was treated the same way. I don't think you will see that happen, preannouncements will happen only with already finished versions. I use Nik, they will not upgrade their present filters for 64 bit, I will cheerfully pay an upgrade to get that usability, and it will take another upgrade from OneOne to get 64 bit as well.

The thing I apprciate about Cone is the constant development being released as updates, there is no single date you get your new software, features are rolled into camera updates, so you will own a very much more complete product over the version life if they continue this policy.

The cost of C1 has never been an issue for me. The conversion quality out of C1 is worth every cent. To be honest I'd have happily paid more for v4 if it would have given me a workflow as good as v3 and wasn't so crash prone. Here's hoping 5 is what we've been waiting for.

I would gladly pay money for v3.7.9 updated to work with newer cameras. v4 and now v5 are awful. Too much eye candy and not enough function. Look at how many people are still on the v3.7.9 forum. A lot of people are not switching to 4 and 5.

I don't use Phase One backs but I understood you were entitled to a dedicated version - do you not get that as part of your support bundle?

In terms of support for general DSLRs then I don't have any complaints about the actual charging policy (rather than the shortened version in the press release). I've had C1 since Adobe were shipping Photoshop CS and besides upgrading from LE to Pro never paid for an upgrade. With Photoshop I've had to pay to upgrade each time I've changed camera.

The next version will be the first version I need to pay for an upgrade on and when this happens I will only buy it if it gives me something I need.

    Agree with Paul.

I'm shooting both P1 back as well and DSLRs so I bought C1 V3.7 Pro for DSLRs. Lucky for me it came with 2 free upgrades. That said, I have no complaints that P1 keeps upgrading the DB version for my back with no charge so I cannot understand why you would complain about using P1 back and C1. In any case if you feel fed up with C1, you can always use ACR to convert your .IIQ files no?

I'm actually even more confused having done a quick search as you have been using C1 for longer than me so should have got a free upgrade also presumably.

I would also happily pay to have a version of 3.7.9 updated to work with all newer cameras and would not miss 4 or 5 at all to be perfectly honest....good comment Bud!

And for whatever it is worth 5 is running like crap on my tower and both 4 and 5 seem like they run smoothly only once in awhile and crash and hang up a lot. 3.7.9 I still say should have been nicely upgraded and not a complete overhaul which I feel was a big move in a wrong direction.

Phase changed to a complete new architecture in v4 and 5 to avoid time lapse between the release of a new camera/OS and its compatibility with C1 3.X
You would probably still not be able to use a 5D MarkII if they had stick with an upgraded 3.7.9.
3.7.9 is the ultimate version of a software that took years to be stable and fast enough. (remember version 3.5 ? )

Shame on C One Pro! I now have no C One Pro and will let all my professional photography friends know how messed up C One P is... if they don't already know. If we upgraded to the terrible 4 version... we should have access to the new 5!... or at least at a heavily discounted price!

Hmm. Phase One must be worried - "all my professional photography friends know how messed up C One P is..." How many friends is that, I wonder?

On a more relevant note I personally am delighted with V5.0 and in the real working world, shooting mail order fashion (high shot-rate), tethered all day long on C1 5.0 with a Canon 1DS Mk3 connected to a MacBook Pro I haven't had one crash. Which I admit, amazed me!

I come from V3 and so of course, yes, I have had issues adapting to the new V4/5 workflow but instead of moaning I have got stuck in to what benefits it brings and when needed, opened Cases with Phase One when I have needed help/criticisms.

Amongst the main benefits are 4 seconds to process a full, uncropped Raw 1DS Mk3 file with a process quality that cannot be bettered by any currently available software.

There are still lots of niggles but I always have the choice to move to other software whenever I want.

There just isn't anyone with better process quality at the moment.

    Regards, Ian
