WOW...OVERLAY TOOL
Where is the overlay tool.
This is super important when it comes to packaging photography.
My clients bring in Jpegs of the packaging they design in Quark and Indesign. I use those JPegs as overlays to insure proper position of product and models
Please don't tell me you deleted this feature...

We still have to wait for PRO version!
I think this 4.1 is just a first step in that direction, but it's basically a refined 4.01 with Digital Back shooting features.
Waiting and waiting!
Until when???

i hadnt got that far, its critical for actual product work to have overlay, like its critical to have sessions( naybe its there but i couldnt see it) and proper tethered shooting for the backs we have spent tens of thousands of pounds on
honestly, if i hadnt leased this for 3 years id have gone over to a hassie!
stop pissing around phase one with your pro users guys and release 4.0 pro as a priority NOW for the people who have to make a living from this and have invested in your digital backs
oh and use macs like the rest of the creative industries , not flaky vista0 -
Overlay tool has not been deleted, it just has not been implemented yet. As with sessions these were Pro features and will be implemented as development continues.
R&D has all of their resources focused on the development of 4 Pro. It is the highest priority. The release of 4.1 should be seen as evidence of this, as we have developed the DB tethering module and first level of implementation of Lens+ and Focus+ for mamiya lenses.
I am not sure what point you are trying to make about using mac and windows. this is a Mac forum isnt it? We have been developing mac based software since the 90's haven't we?0 -
Jon
the jibe on windows relates to the strategic alliance with microsoft, you know that. For years phase one windows version lagged the mac version by an order of magnitude, now whats the priority?
From a user viewpoint, you have a product 3.7.7 that i started with although my back came with 3.7.8 which was beta at that time.
that product has a set of features that make the product work and reflect its growth to date based on requests from the PRO market, consumers dont buy digital backs, if and when they do, its to sit on the tables of their hollywood homes.
So back to photography. you have 3.7.x...with sessions, with overlay etc it works. All day every day
then 4.0 is released, and only useful for consumers, no tethered use,no sessions ...waste of resource, for me yes? i know how ling it takes to get a product from beta to release and the support that takes, and for who to gain.
4.1 is out now. No sessions, ( back to file browsing, fine, ive not tried it, but why change?). No overlay......one of the most important studio functions. its not implemented?. cant see styles either or the color editor, , but maybe im not looking close enough. What does this mean?, you havent written the code?, its not transferable from 3.7.x?, you dont feel its important?....have you asked how many guys use all these functions in the studio, just about every product and fashion photographer!
ive got 4.1 on my laptop and it looks great, zoom focus nice!, nice grey menu, fast processing, but i cant put it on the studio machine and then go back to pasting cover outines in film onto my monitor!, loose all my styles, i could, but you know where im going with this. Product updates should be just that, updates, not another product with missing or not implemented key features
why spend effort building a consumer product when the consumer has enough in 3.7.x, and leaving your pros picking up the pieces??, are we the guys paying for all the development, whilst you work on software to make margin and sell to joe public with a canon xxxD??
clearly to me the sales volumes to the rapidly expanding non phase one comsumer market must be driving this rational. Aperture etc
I love my phase one back , and 3.7.x, it doesnt crash that often, but come on im not the only guy on this forum singing this song.
we need 4.x pro, you know this, deliver it in weeks, months, max . Not this time next year or Victors trade in offers will be snapped up as leases end and the hard numbers have to be crunched.

Hi Andrew,
I appreciate the clarification on the windows jibe so allow me to clarify why I did not recognize the criticism. The Microsoft alliance has little to do with Capture One or out digital backs, and does not have a bearing on our development resources. This is a partnership towards future software developments outside of the capture one realm, and such development is not taking place in Copenhagen where we are based.
Now to answer your questions related to 4.1 and the feature that you are asking about. These are all things that are currently under development so no we have not forgotten them.
So why version for and not product updates to 3.7? Version 3.7 was reaching the limits to what we could do with it. Updates such as new camera support or new feature implementation requires significant work on the 3.7 platform. for instance the implementation of a new SDK for updated canon tethering may take a few months and require a major rewrite of the software, whereas it may only take a few weeks in the 4 platform.
the next question you ask has been asked several times before... why release the LE "consumer" version and wait for the pro? Admittedly for a compnay built on the success of professional photogratphers this seems rather daff, but there is good reason for it. Capture One 4 is not a dumbed down version of Capture One 4 Pro as we saw with 3.7. The new architecture is constructed as a central processing core to we we then develop the capture (tethering) core and then additional options such as color editor. The processing core must be completed first since it is the basis for features to be added to. And rather than make everyone wait till the full pro released to release an LE version
(which would essentially be the processing core minus a few features) we decided to release the processing core as the LE level CO4 once it was complete so that we would delay the software even more then it had been already. Capture One 4.1 is a similar incremental release.
You will see in the full pro version sessions, overlay, multi monitor support, color editor, more advanced Lens+ and Focused+ correction (including support for other MF systems besides Mamiya), multiple processing outputs, batch rename, customizable shortcuts, and many many more...0 -
thanks Jon,
you know where im coming from.
I wait with baited macpro......til the big and shiny 4.x pro....but when? i hope intervening beta releases hit the key pro needs. Please, the sooner the better
