How does one go about this? Does it require ftp'ing?

  You do not need to ftp images to display images on this forum, but you do have to have your images on the web somewhere. Here is the format:
  
  This code:
  [img]http://forum.phaseone.com/templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif[/img]
  
  displays this image:
  http://forum.phaseone.com/templates/subSilver/images/logo_phpBB.gif
