So Where is 4.0 ? ... 'Just the Facts Ma'am' ...
At Phase One, we have a number of capabilities which are very important for getting the very best result to our customers.
Foremost, in our Research & Development area, we have had staff working for the last 14 years developing RAW workflow software and developing the most sophisticated imaging processing technology which facilitates that we can develop a better image quality than anybody else in the world. “
We have a strong team of R&D staff that work every day to optimize our products. This work is done in very close dialogue with our customers.
This is a fundamental value from Phase One, that we work very closely with our customers, have professional photographers on staff, and we closely follow what is important to photographers worldwide.
We don’t just do technology for the sake of technology.
We try to develop the most appropriate technology to facilitate that we provide tools to customers that are better than anything else on the market.
Henrik O. HÃ¥konsson
Team Captain / CEO – Phase One
I feel these statements speak volumes about the very small company based in Denmark that is Phase One.
Aside from our Digital Backs, Phase One / Capture One does not enjoy a vast name recognition like the competition.
This I find ironic since there was not much competition when Capture One started 5 years ago.
Those that won’t compromise on image quality know about us, but getting a greater recognition is what our efforts are all about with software sales.
Fact: Phase One has always cooperated with others in providing what is important and needed in the photography industry, including the competition.
Regarding Silence and Secrecy claims, maybe there is a little bit more now than before.
Now the competition with larger companies entering the RAW workflow program efforts is welcome. Competition is great in that it raises RAW format awareness and it makes all strive towards improvement.
Is there a software company who issues progress briefs regarding their version development? – I don’t know of any.
Even other Phase One staff members are not briefed on Developer progress until a Beta or Release Candidate is available.
Yes, the progress of 4.0 has been delayed, and that is all there is to know.
In this world of a growing need by many for Immediate Gratification, some are never satisfied with new and improved product releases.
I’ve seen this again and again on this Forum with new model DSLR support, Bug Fixes, and Feature Requests.
LE 4.0 will arrive in 2007.
In the past, Phase One attempted to indicate a release by Month, then by Quarter, and learned how unrelenting customers can be and how unrealistic this effort is.
Fact: No version of Capture One will ever be released until it meets a very stringent testing protocol and is truly ready for the market.
Fact: Good software development takes time and is an ongoing effort.
Patience Is a Virtue.

Stages of Program Release.
1. 4.0 LE Beta
2. 4.0 LE Release Candidate
3. 4.0 LE Final Release
• Available for Free to All PRO owners and Digital Back Owners
Fact: Since version 1. to current 3.7.7 Capture One has seen major progress within the algorithm speed, image noise reduction; program improvement as a whole.
All of these Updates have been Free.
To state Capture One 3.7.7 is outdated is quite far from the truth.
Fact: One’s original $500 investment is solid.
You’ll get 4.0 for Free and the next major UpGrade for Free as well.
There were discussions of making version 3.6 a chargeable UpGrade, but it was Free.
Same discussions arose for release of 3.7.4 which was the very first RAW program to become a Universal application to run natively on both Intel and Power-PC based Mac computers. Again, it was Free.
Had 3.7.4 been named 4.0, maybe these Forum threads wouldn’t be here.
Phase One always has and will provide the most current product information at the web site. Release of new versions almost always involves a Forum Topic for the Beta and/or Release Candidate for the program. So, those who attend this User Forum will most certainly know when 4.0 LE becomes available.
Those fortunate enough to have observed the Demonstration of Alpha 4.0 at Photokina or Photo Plus know good things are coming.
Those that have already moved on to other programs, Buyers Remorse may set in as you return to Capture One. If not, truly glad you’re happy with the change.
For all trying to make this decision, the best advice I can offer is to compare all programs in order to make this a wise and informed choice.
Because when truly compared side-by-side, and image-by-image,
Phase One is confident that Capture One will remain the RAW workflow program that set the standard in image quality and workflow efficiency.
Sincerely,

Hi Keith,
thanks for the message.
Be proud of what phaseone achieved by now.
There is no serious alternative. I've checked some. V3.7.x will be on the top for further future. With regard to the workflow, with regard to the extraordinary colormanagement workflow and above all with regard to "analog look" and the by far best picture quality.
I am really looking very forward to V4. But if it's, say, march next year... I'm looking forward to march next year.
Meanwhile I enjoy working with V3.7.7... because there's nothing else out there anyhow.

Yes, I must say that sounded like great PR that you rattled off however actions do speak louder then words! I too have considerable experience in IT world specifically software development, and all I can say its all about setting the customers expectations, which it appears has not been followed. Phase One backs are awesome products, having said that now lets have a software program that meets the same level....sooner rather then later! 0 -

I prefer Lightroom however it just doesn't process the images from Phase One as well as C1. But that seems to be the only thing that C1 does well. 0 -
So I think you never get a real idea of C1 and the way of how to profit from C1. LR is a paper tiger. Great design but nothing special inside. White balance is a desaster. Exposure correction is somewhat like a luminance shift but is far from exposure values. The so called highlight recovery works much better in C1. Colormanagement is reduced to the max (not professionell). Adjustments are always 'delayed'... it is not realtime as in C1 what is essential to me. And I agree: picture quality of C1 is much better. Which is, by the way, the prior thing. 0 -
Thanks, Keith, for the explanation. 3.7.7 is a solid program and I have given up looking for better raw converters. So, whereas I await 4.0 with some excitement, I am content to wait until it is really ready for prime time.

I'm sorry, but I have to agree with wj66, this is exactly the kind of PR-bs that PhaseOne has been feeding us now for over a year. Here are the facts as I see them.. C1 is sorely lacking compared to ACR in pretty much all aspects, the only thing it does better as far as I can tell is noise control (which is understandable since they make the backs). I can understand how you might be happy with C1 if you just want decent results straight from the camera, but I shoot fashion and need to be able to do a lot of manual adjustments and fine-tuning to suit my creative vision. To keep ignoring the voices of your customers who have payed BIG money for your backs and keep chanting this mantra of how great C1 is just comes across as plain disrespectful to me. I for one don't want to settle with anything less than ALL the quality my digital back can give me, and waiting for over a year for you guys to catch up with the competition while being directed to some static press-release from 2006 is NOT ok in my book. If at least you would have added export to DNG a year ago (or this year for that matter) I would have been somewhat less irritated today.

??? What exactly can you do in ACR (even 4.1) that you can not do in C1? Or are you talking about C1 LE? I really hope that the Color Editor of C1 pro will be continued in V4!
