deleting saga

I had hundreds of images labelled as "The selected image is either unavailable, in an unsupported format or corrupted" in one catalog. I have no idea, why this suddenly happened. The catalog had some 23000 images. I thought, why not deleting the entire catalog and importing the images again. Here begins the saga: It took me four days to delete from the the catalog and then delete from the trash folder. 

What did I do wrong? What should I do differently?

    If you are going to remove images from a catalog and start again, simply go to the folder where the Catalog is saved and delete the Catalog.

    I hope you haven't deleted the images from disk as well, because it sounds like you have. Remember if you delete from trash don't select Remove File from Disk as it will delete the image.
