Large Group of Missing Files Possibly Written to Card?
I recently completed a shoot and somehow the master files of a number of images are all missing from the drive that I was writing to (as well as both backups) The images are all sequential and was the second half of the final day of the shoot. I am totally at a loss to what may have happened except for one possibility - they started writing to card in camera. I would verify by checking card but accidentally sent the card back with the rental camera and it is currently being shipped to me.
I was shooting a Sony A7R IV. Is it possible to shoot to card while tethered with this camera? If so, how might my write destination have changed from external drive to card ? Thanks.

I am sorry about the issue you have.
I assume you were shooting tethered. Was the drive you were writing to an external drive? Anyway, make sure you only use an internal drive next time, and backup to an external drive.
Maybe the connection between camera and computer was lost and the camera switched to using the card instead. You will know as soon you have your card. Or maybe the drive was full or not properly connected (in case of an external drive).
Apart from that, with a Sony A7R IV you most probably can shoot both to card and computer during tethering. I have a A7R III and it is able to do this. This is a feature that Sony built into their firmware and Capture One is not aware off. You have to configure this in the camera and it is not enabled by default as far as I know. But with a rental camera, you may not start with the default settings unless you reset the camera when you start.
