Can Hot Folders be made better?
In the pursuit of safe sets and social distancing in this modern era, I've found myself tethering Canon cameras over ethernet more lately, which lends the distinct advantage of reliably tethering nearly limitless distances.
The drawback with this approach is not being able to natively tether in C1. As such, I've been limited to utilizing C1's "Hot Folder" functionality in a sessions setting, which comes with major drawbacks:
1. Lack of ability to rename the images (using tokens) as they come in.
2. Inability to automatically apply adjustments. Any settings in the "Next Capture Adjustments" tool do not seem to have an effect when photos come in.
3. A substantial delay in photos appearing in C1 when many images are taken at once. Say I take a continuous burst of 100 images with my camera. C1 typically waits until all the photos have been transferred and there's no more file activity in the folder before they start showing up. On a fast paced shoot, this can put me hundreds of photos behind the current action. This can be frustrating to people monitoring the shoot via Capture Pilot. Strangely, this issue is unpredictable, on occasion C1 is able to keep up but it's not the norm. I can see some correlation to switching away from and back to C1 as the active app window but can't manage to reproduce it reliably.
Side note: I am running this on an iMac Pro shooting to the internal hard drive, so I doubt a faster machine is the solution.
4. I have to admit, I'm not sure what the "Hot Folder Enabled" checkmark even does when in a session. What is the difference between having this on or off? It also does not seem to make a difference whether the folder I'm currently viewing is the "Capture Folder" or not. On a related note, it seems you must be actively viewing that folder for new images to come in. C1 won't be checking that folder for new images in the background any other way.
My first aim with this post is to find out if anyone has found any good methods for working around these issues. My second aim is to hopefully get enough people echoing the desire to see the Hot Folder functionality improved that C1 makes that a priority for future releases. (Although with these and other limitations going back over a decade I'm not holding my breath).
