Preview render times and drop down tool choices

Been having this quite a bit of late, and a reboot doesn't seem to help.

1) Preview images are taking forever to load, I've been working with a ten year old session and it was fine, but one from last year doesn't render the previews at all, no amount of patience works.  Turn on and off the hardware acceleration, rebooted app, rebooted Mac, no good.

2) occasionally, I cannot get the option for the tools to drop down. I click on the down arrow but nothing shows up. Maddening!

3) sometimes with an adjustment layer I cannot see the brush select area (pink/red), just the little dot that indicates the location, but no sign of how much area the brush has selected.
