Live View and Tethering

Hello all, I am having a few issues with tethering and live view. The focus controls other than auto focus (AF) are greyed out. I have tried a variety of Nikon and Sigma lenses and this is the case for all of them. Hoping I'm just doing something wrong.

Here are my specs.

I'm on an older MacBook Pro running High Sierra and the latest version of Capture One. I'm using a Nikon D850 with a variety of lenses. I am using a shorter USB 3.0 cable and have checked system profiler and am getting 5Gb/sec speeds. Capturing itself works fine and is very quick. Only live view is being problematic.

Also, when using live view is it possible to set the spot point for focus? I don't think there is but thought I'd check. Thanks!

    I have the same here with my Nikon D850. I guess it is because Nikon doesn't allow access to focusing in their API to 3rd party developers. But I am not sure. Let's see if others can confirm or clarify here. 

    And yes, it is really annoying not to be able to focus directly in C1 when tethered to a Nikon.

    Andy, thanks so much for this! Totally solved it. I wish Phase One would include that little tip in their help files. It really is pretty obscure and not something that you’d think would affect it.

    Now I just wish there was a way to change focus points!

    Hi Patrick,

    yes, this is a nasty setting (AF-S) to make the arrows available in C1. Actually I reported it to C1 support with the same intention to note it somewhere in their documentation for other Nikon users.

    Now let's get to your other focusing question. What do you mean by 'a way to change focus points'? 

    Actually if you are 'not' in live view within C1 and tethered, you can use your usual focusing and release in camera. From there the image gets transferred to C1. So I guess this is the preferred way when shooting moving objects (like fashion, etc.) and being tethered to you computer. Focus and release on the camera.

    Now for still life or product photography there is this way to go to 'Live View' and place focus exactly where you want it with either the help of the arrow keys in C1 or by turning the focus ring on the lens. For visual help you can use the 'Live View Focus Meter' tool within C1 where you can set up to 3 reference indicators. I find this method quite useful although maybe not that straight forward as by simply placing a focus point with a click of a mouse in live view.

    There is a nice recent webinar where David Grover explains that handling (around 37:00 min into it). Don't know if you watched this, else it might be worth doing so.

    Patrick, Andy,

    I'm not sure that the C1 team is really in a position to keep up with and document all of the possible foibles of the workings of every tethering supported camera brand/model. Especially what may be nuances of applications or maybe features of a camera system not fully uncovered by any SDK the manufacturer may have made available.

    However the on-line used guide pages allow user comments so there is nothing to stop people adding useful information to the existing documents. I would think generic comments might be just as helpful as specific comments.

     

    For example "If camera will not focus in live view check the focus setting on the lens (AF.Manual) and the Focus mode in the camera controls." Might be a more useful and generic comment than specific and comprehensive instructions for a model/lens combination. Less can be more in such situations. After all we do like to think of photographers as people with a creative and inventive component to their abilities and in many cases a hint is all that may be needed to help people discover a solution to their own immediate challenges.

     

    Such comments could also provide a basis of content enhancement when the support pages are being reviewed.

    Grant, good idea. I understand Phase One not responding to every little thing but that one little setting on the flagship model from Nikon seems like a miss and we can’t be the only one dealing with it. Good point about the online guide. I’ll have to check it out. I actually use the PDF version because I’m old fashioned.

    Andy, I mostly shoot in single-point mode as I do a lot of macro work. I’d love to be able to use that point mode in live when tethered and just click where I want it to be. But you’re right, I can just do it in camera in regular capture mode so it’s not a huge deal. As for the focus assistant, I can’t seem to get it work. When I twist the focus barrel the orange lines around each rectangle move and kind of indicate they are focusing but don’t actually appear to do that. I can’t get the white lines to appear. A lot of this is really just experimenting for me as it isn’t how I shoot in the studio or field but I like knowing how everything works and as I do some work as a digi tech it is important to be able to get things to function properly.
