Wait and see. It's a little bir early to speak about that, isn't it ?

Adobe already supports iPadOS. Not too early, I think, to make some business decision in C1. Too early maybe for C1 to speak about this, especially given their communication culture. I can imagine this comes at the cost of users leaving C1.

As far as I can tell, the majority of Capture One users are on Macs not PCs. If that is right, then I think that it is a reasonable assumption that Capture One will want to support forthcoming MacOS versions. As to whether a compatible version of Capture One will be ready as soon as the first new-style Macs are on sale, that is another matter. On past form, I think you could expect them to take their time to test out any new version with the finalised and released new OS before bringing out a compatible version of Capture One, and I suspect that is the right approach.

I don’t think (and I hope I’m wrong) the transition will be fast to ARM based macs for Capture One. I’m quite sure they’ll support Big Sur but ARM based Macs require recompiling the whole software or running through emulation Rosetta 2. The history gives us some clue about the ability of CO adapting new Apple technologies. An example is, CO still does not support Metal, does not support HEIC.

Also not quite sure how having 2 different compiled system support each other as currently you can use a catalog which has been created on Mac, on a Windows and visa versa.

I tend to agree with 'photo by FA' in that I doubt C1 will support ARM or the associated universal binaries for a while after ARM Macs are released. Their uptake on support of Metal is a big case in point.

However, I don't think that's reason to panic at this point because:

    - Apple's already said it plans to rollout ARM Macs over 2 years. Assuming that estimate holds (a big IF at this point), Apple will support macOS/Intel releases for at least that long.

    - Apple said they'll support macOS/Intel for a number of years after the transition is complete. IF you believe them (remember: Cook also said the new Mac Pro would run Mojave, which released versions never did and apparently can't be forced to), then C1 probably doesn't have to even support ARM for several years. While C1/Intel might not run as fast as a native ARM application, it "should" still run, just as not supporting Metal hasn't stopped C1 from running on current OSes.

    - As for the database concern, I'm guessing that C1's databases use SQLite, which is cross-platform. There's undoubtedly development work to do, but I'd expect it to be relatively minimal compared to the heavy lifting of adapting current code to ARM.

I'm sure [hope] the developers have started to think about this already, but IMO it's a bit early for them to start devoting significant resources to it considering what continues to need fixing in the current version—DAM performance/functionality is high on my list.

I'm adapting a wait-and-see approach to both C1 and whatever Apple does with macOS. As for ARM vs Intel Macs—also wait-and-see. Apple may have transitioned processor architectures a couple of times before, but both the hardware and OS designs took several iterations to get to function smoothly.  My cynical side sees Apple's Mac evolution as being more a case of "trust us' than the old "it just works".

As FA mentioned, CO's lack of support for Metal after all this time has left me feeling less than optimistic about their willingness to move forward. Additionally, it took over 7 months for them to clean all the show stopping bugs I had out of CO20 (I had been submitting bug reports all the while). With the rising cost of the program, and the slow pace of progress and bug-fixes, I'm personally getting ready to switch platforms when Apple Silicon drops. My computer is in need of an update, and if CO doesn't make any announcements by the time of launch (which is probably less than a month away now), my editing suite will likely be in need of an update as well.

I hope they make the move, Adobe is working closely with Apple to support the new M1 based hardware and since I"m getting the new M1 based Mac Air I would hate to be forced 1o move to LR/PS because I H8 subscriptions.
