Distortion correction Nikon cameras
-
I have noticed the same. I usually shoot RAW and JPG and it’s very hard to match Capture One lens corrections to the in-camera corrections.

Have you found a way of correcting the distortion to your liking?

It depends on lens and focal length. But even when I get distortion and fall-off corrected as good as possible in C1, I still prefer Nikon's in-camera correction in most cases.
I also find C1 lens correction non-intuitive. In the documentation it reads: "Capture One’s Distortion slider can be used to fine-tune either barrel or pincushion distortion correction, depending on the lens profile selected. The slider functionality automatically changes to suit the type of distortion. This is particularly convenient when the profile contains data for both barrel and pincushion distortion such as that found with zoom lenses."
Apparently, the sliders function depends on the lens profile. If the profile has info about pincushion distortion at a certain focal length, the slider will only work in that direction. It is still unclear to me what the values represent. Is "0" no correction or full correction according to the lens profile? Is "100" full correction according to the lens profile, or is it over-corrected according to the profile. I would prefer to have a slider to both direction, where "0" represents uncorrected, when no lens profile is selected and full correction when a profile is selected. In both cases, one direction from "0" would be correction towards more pincushion and the other direction towards barrel.0 -
Simon,
I think the section you have quoted refers to using either of the default barrel or pincushion distortion profiles that are supplied as a starting point point for lenses with evident potential distortion but are NOT specifically profiled by C1 and, back in the day, were also not corrected by software within the lens/camera combination.
The ides there is that you will have identified an unsupported lens (may be an old manual lens for example) with evident pincushion or barrel distortion and then select the profile for which ever distortion type is exhibits as an aid to working in the correction.
There is also a "generic" correction type for lenses without extremely Pincushion or barrel distortion.
Beyond that there are named and Capture One created correction for many lenses and for more recent lenses and camera that communicate with them, "Manufacturer" Profiles which are the manufacturer's own corrections for a particular lens or maybe sometimes lens/camera combination.
This sort of facility started mostly about 10 years ago with micro 4/3rds and has spread into mainstream as in cameras technology has advanced.
So if the Nikon camera/lens combo offers a Manufacturer lens profile using that should equate to what you see in the internally generated jpg but take into account there may still be some differences in colour, for example, simply because the image will likely be processed different beteen the Nikon and C1 processing engines.

The overview of the Lens Correction tool may make useful reading as an aid to understanding the more detailed support pages for the function.

Thanks for the insights everyone. The Nikon profiles overall are definitely not right, although I’m happy with what I see on screen. I would still love to correct the distortion even further though, and wonder why there isn’t more reach in the Distortion slider.
