EIP and adjustment/metadata confusion
Hi,
Trying out EIP, but I'm slightly confused about how it works. Reading on C1s web page, my interpretation is that all the settings (metadata, adjustments etc) stored within its archive which would make it easy to move around different computers. When testing this, I seem to get the following behavior:
1. For testing purposes I have one EIP file which is imported into two different catalogues.
2. In catalogue 1 I make some adjustments to the image (= the EIP file). At this point I would have expected some sort of update done to the EIP file itself to reflect those changes, but it seems to be untouched.
3. Moving to catalogue 2, the adjustment made in the previous step does not show up.
4. Retried this with different adjustments and metadata changes, same result.
Is it correctly understood that the EIP only contains the adjustments that existed during the time the export was made, but any changes after that will not be updated in the file itself but rather the catalogues database? This would mean that just moving the EIP itself it not enough, but rather a new export needs to be done.
Thanks!
/Patrick

I think that EIP is only intended for use with sessions. The thing is that sessions and catalogs store edit information in very different ways.
- In catalogs, it is stored in the catalog database.
- But in sessions it is stored in sidecar files in subfolders of the folder where the image is located. EIPs are intended as a means of putting the image and the edit information in those sidecar files together into one package.

I remember seeing a video about EIP in the Capture One YouTube site, so you may want to have a watch of some of the videos. If I remember correctly it was related to catalogues and sessions. I think what Ian said is correct, exporting to EIP is good for transferring files with associated edits from place to place and from memory it can be imported into a catalogue, so can be used to transfer edits between catalogues, but as Ian said in a catalogue, the edits are stored in the catalogue database and so when edits are made in one catalogue the edits are not transferred automatically to another catalogue through the EIP file.
What you said is correct tha the EIP only contains the adjustments that existed during the time the export was made, but any changes after that will not be updated in the file itself but rather the catalogues database.
I believe that EIP is essentially a zip file that contains the image and all the associated files needed to store the edits.

Appreciate it Ian and Mark! It seems to work according to my test then, and still seems quite useful when moving files around between computers (which I do quite frequently).
Have a great day!

You might try an EIP pack/unpack procedure.
Unpack the EIP in catalog 1, do your adjustments then repack as EIP.
Unpack in catalog 2 and see if the adjustments carry over.I only use sessions so I'm just guessing here.
