To my understanding, your screen resolution is equivalent to the max preview size, i.e. 5120px). If the previews were smaller, CO will always need to load the full image...

    Details are missing:

    • Are the previews (re-)generated after changing the setting? Just changing the preview size applies only to future imports.
    • Where are the images stored? if internal, is it a HDD or SSD?
    • Do you use catalog or session? Location?
    • What is the setting for XMP-Synchronisation?

The GPU uses the same RAM as the CPU

    • How much RAM is installed in your iMac? How much RAM is used/free?

Preview all 5120 - max size.

Preview was regenerated after settings change.

    Images stored on internal hdd

Session. In folder with images. That folder in images standard folder.

    XMP sync stetted on never.

32gb RAM Capture One barely uses 3-4gb

My Windows system tends to work with up to around 8Gb of RAM plus whatever it needs for disk based memory on the SSD.

To be constrained to 3-4 working with larger files seems odd but my knowledge of Macs is minimal.

I can end up with more than 8-9 Gb RAM used with more than one Session/Catalogue open at the same time.
